Alvise Sebastiano Mocenigo III. (* August 29, 1662 in Venice ; † May 21, 1732 ibid) was the 112th Doge of Venice . He ruled from 1722 to 1732.

Alvise Mocenigo III. came from the branched Mocenigo family , which provided a total of seven doges : Tommaso Mocenigo (1414–1423), Pietro Mocenigo (1574–1576), Giovanni Mocenigo (1478–1485), Alvise Mocenigo I , Alvise Mocenigo II. , Alvise Mocenigo III . and Alvise Mocenigo IV. (1763-1778).

The last two Mocenigo doges came from the Mocenigo branch of San Polo.

Life

Alvise Sebastiano, twin brother of Alvise IV. Called Leonardo, was the son of another Alvise IV. Mocenigo, Procurator of San Marco, and of Cecilia Michiel. He had had a brilliant career in the Venetian Navy. Equipped with a solid literary education, he entered the Navy as a youth and rose continuously to the Proveditore generale da mar . He belonged to the entourage of Francesco Morosini , the highly respected Capitan general da mar in Venice , who had once again achieved astonishing successes in the last fighting of the republic against the Ottoman supremacy . Morosini had succeeded in conquering a large part of the territories lost to the Ottomans one last time for Venice, and the republic had given him the honorary title Peloponnesiacus as a thank you . He was involved in the conquest of Callon, the siege of Canea in Crete and of Chios . Although he was less successful in the armed conflicts with the Ottomans following the reconquest of the Peloponnese, he remained highly regarded in Venice.

After completing his marine career, Alvise Sebastiano devoted himself to politics and held several high offices. He was Podestà in Brescia and a member of the Consiglio dei Dieci . He was a participant of the Venetian delegation in the peace negotiations of Passarowitz , in which the boundaries between Venice and the Ottoman Empire were determined for the time being.

Alvise Sebastiano was not married and had no children.

The Doge's Office

When he was elected Doge on August 24, 1722 - in the first ballot, as had almost become the rule by now - he had to pay out of his own pocket because of the great costs of his military career, which, as was not unusual in Venice, he had to pay had, heavily in debt. However, the debt was covered by selling his valuables after his death.

His reign was an uneventful time for the republic. Mocenigo had St. Mark's Square paved and St. Mark's Basilica and campanile restored. He arranged for the fortifications of various fortresses in the Stato da Mar , promoted the establishment of an Academy of Arts and the Società letteraria universale .

He died on May 21, 1732. He was buried in a grave in the ground in San Zanipolo , in the area of ​​the family's grave monuments that are important in terms of art history.
