Pietro Liberi : Francesco Cornaro (1575-1656).

Francesco Cornaro , also called Francesco Corner , (born March 6, 1585 in Venice , † June 5, 1656 ibid) was the 101st Doge of Venice . Corner was elected after 26 ballots at the age of 81. His reign, from May 17 to June 5, 1656, was the shortest of a Venetian Doge.

family

The Corner belonged to the oldest families in Venice and traced their family tree back to the Romans. They were one of the wealthiest families in town and had made their fortunes primarily through money lending. They provided a total of four doges, apart from Francesco the doges Marco Corner , Giovanni Corner I and Giovanni Corner II , grandsons of Francesco. He was fourth of five sons of Doge Giovanni I. Cornaro and Chiara Dolfin. From his marriage to Andriana Priuli at least five sons were born.

The family's reputation in 17th-century Venice was still damaged by the shameless favoritism of the two connected Doge families Priuli and Corner, and because of the criminal activities of individual family members in the 1930s.

Francesco Cornaro was buried in the Cornaro family chapel in San Nicola da Tolentino .
