The Reichenau power plant is a run-of-river power plant on the Alpine Rhine . The weir of the power plant is about 2.6 km below the confluence of the Vorderrhein and Hinterrhein near Reichenau and is the only barrage on the Rhine as far as Lake Constance . Half of the weir lies on the ground of the municipality of Tamins , the rest of the system is in the municipality of Domat / Ems .

The power plant was built from 1959 to 1962 to supply the Ems-Chemie . Axpo AG has held 85% of the shares since 2003 , the remaining 15% are owned by the Canton of Graubünden . The operator of the plant is Axpo Hydro Surselva AG. Annual production averages 106.8 GWh.

The plant is built as a diversion power plant. The Rhine is dammed above Domat / Ems by a 78 m wide weir with four control openings. It directs a maximum of 120 m³ / s of water into the approximately one kilometer long headwater channel , which partly runs underground. At the end of this channel is the machine house with the two Kaplan turbines . The water then flows through a short underwater canal about 3.9 km below the confluence of the Vorder and Hinterrhein back into the natural river bed.

In April 2000, a fish ladder was put into operation at the weir of the power plant , which is mainly used by lake trout from Lake Constance. There was no fish migration aid in 2014. It is estimated that their installation will cost 3 to 5 million CHF, but it is not clear what kind of solution should be chosen.
