Arlington is a city in Tarrant County , Texas . Arlington is part of the Dallas - Fort-Worth- Arlington metropolitan area and is home to the Texas Rangers baseball team and stadium, Rangers Ballpark in Arlington , two amusement parks ( Six Flags Over Texas and Hurricane Harbor ) and the new stadium for the Dallas Cowboys football team . The city is about 20 km east of Fort Worth and about 32 km west of Dallas. It shares a common parish boundary with Kennedale , Grand Prairie , Mansfield and Fort Worth and surrounds the two independent enclave parishes Dalworthington Gardens and Pantego .

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 256.5 km 2 (99.0 mi 2 ). The Mark Holtz Lake was created artificially.
history
The city was founded in 1875 and named after Arlington , Virginia . After the arrival of the railroad in 1876, it grew as a center of cotton processing and agriculture. Arlington received city rights in 1884. Major industrialization did not begin until 1954 when a General Motors plant was built. The automotive and aerospace industries contributed to one of the highest rates of population growth in the United States between 1950 and 1990.
Arlington has been twinned with Bad Königshofen in Lower Franconia since 1952 .

Schools and colleges
The Arlington Independent School District (AISD) runs the majority of state schools. The six high schools of the AISD are Arlington , James Bowie , Sam Houston , Mirabeau B. Lamar , James Martin and Juan Seguín . The southern part of Arlington is headed by the Mansfield Independent School District .
Also in Arlington are the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), the southeastern campus of Tarrant County College, and Arlington Baptist College . The University of Texas at Arlington is the third largest university in Texas, currently 25,297 students are enrolled (as of fall 2004).
Sports
Arlington is home to the Major League - Baseball team the Texas Rangers , the Dallas Renegades from 2020 resurrected football league XFL and since 2009 the seat of the Dallas Cowboys ( American football ). As everywhere in Texas, Friday night high school football has plenty of fans of all ages.

Arlington is the largest city in the United States that does not have a traditional public transport system. The citizens had voted against it several times. A bus line was introduced in 2013, but abolished again in 2018. It was replaced by a ride pooling system from Via .
