Bedford is a city in Tarrant County in the US state of Texas and is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex .

The city is located approximately 20 km north of the east-west US Highway 30 in northeast Texas, is approximately 120 km from Oklahoma and has a total area of ​​25.9 km², of which 0.3 km² is water. The distance to Dallas in the east is around 40 km and the Dallas / Fort Worth International Airport is around 14 km away.

The first settlers came to this area in 1840. Milton Moore from North Carolina opened the first school in his log cabin in 1861 with around a dozen students. The settlement was founded in 1870 after Weldon Bodo came here from Tennessee and opened a general store and a mill for local farmers. Bodo and a number of the farmers agreed on the name Bedford for the settlement, after the town of the same name in Tennessee, where some of the settlers had come from.

In 1874 the New Hope Christian Church was founded by Bodo, Moore and a few others and in 1877 the first post office was set up in Bodo's house. In 1882 Bedford College was founded, a combination of high school and junior college . From this time the place was an aspiring and steadily growing city with about 2000 inhabitants at the turn of the century.

The city's upward trend ended shortly after 1900. In 1901 the Dallas-Fort Worth Interurban Railroad moved its tracks south of the Trinity River . US Highway 80 was also built on the other side of the river, cutting Bedford off from through traffic. In 1903, the Rock Island Railroad was also moved past the town and residents and business owners slowly migrated. The post office was closed in 1909. By 1940 the population had dropped to 80 people.

In the early 1940s, due to the beginning of the Second World War , the government built a military base and several defensive positions nearby, which quickly increased the population to 400. Between 1955 and 1960, the city grew fivefold in area and the number of inhabitants rose to 2,700 during this time.

In 1970 the city already had more than 10,000 inhabitants and in 1974 the old Boys Ranch became the largest park in the city. An industrial park, several shopping centers and restaurants opened, and the city's proximity to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport made it a popular place to live and an industrial location for the airport's supply industry. In 1980 the number of residents had risen to 20,800 and the number of shops to around 400. In 1990 the population was 44,000. Bedford's old school has been restored and reopened as a museum, visitor center and meeting room in the summer of 1996. In 2000 there were 1,798 stores.

On December 31, 1997, the Christian television station Daystar Television Network began broadcasting; meanwhile, the station, whose headquarters are still Bedford, is the world's second largest Christian television station.

Demographic data

According to the 2000 census, 47,152 people lived here in 20,251 households and 12,515 families. The population density was 1,820.5 inhabitants per km². The racial the population is made up of 87.63% White, 3.65% African American, 0.51% Native American, 3.62% Asian, 0.25% Pacific Islander, and 2.44% non-American ethnic groups. About 1.89% are of two or more races and 7.22% of the population are Spanish or Latin American.

Of the 20,251 households, 29.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 49.8% of these were married couples living together. 8.8% were single mothers and 38.2% were non-families. 31.6% of all households were single households and there were people living in 5.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.93.

22.5% of the population were under 18 years old, 9.7% 18 to 24, 32.9% 25 to 44, 26.1% 45 to 64, and 8.7% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 93.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 91.1 men.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 54,436 , and the median income for a family is $ 71,017. Males had a median income of $ 45,938 versus $ 33,012 for females. The per capita income was $ 29,466. 3.7% of the population and 2.4% of families are below the poverty line. 4.2% of these were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 5.6% were 65 or older.
