The Trinity River ( English for "Dreifaltigkeits-Fluss") is a 1140 km long river , which has its origin in the north of the US state Texas , lies completely in Texas and flows into the Gulf of Mexico .
Origin and course
The Trinity River is formed from the confluence of the West Fork and Elm Fork west of Dallas . The East Fork is a larger left tributary of the Trinity River while the Clear Fork flows into the West Fork .
The East Fork Trinity River has its source in Grayson County and flows into the West Fork after 126 km in southwest Kaufman County .
The West Fork Trinity River , which rises in the south of Archer County , flows southeast and meets the East Fork after 290 km .
The shortest arm of the Trinity River is the Clear Fork Trinity River . It rises in the northwest of Parker County and flows first southeast, then northeast and after a total of 72 km flows into the West Fork near Fort Worth .
The Elm Fork Trinity River rises in the east of Montague County and flows southeast. After 137 km it merges with the West Fork and forms the actual Trinity River 1.6 km west of downtown Dallas . From here it flows 681 km to the southeast, where it flows into the Gulf of Mexico.
Surname
The Caddo Indians in central Texas named the river Arkikosa. Tribes near the coast referred to it as Daycoa.
The Spanish explorer Alonso De León was probably the first to use the present name in 1690. He called the river "La Santisima Trinidad" (German: "The Holy Trinity" or English: "The Most Holy Trinity"). The name "Trinity" has been used consistently since the 18th century.
