Kirstin Taylor Maldonado (* 16th May 1992 in Fort Worth , Texas) is an American singer , songwriter and member of the a cappella - group Pentatonix . She has released seven studio albums with Pentatonix, won three Grammy Awards and sold over six million albums. With the song Break a Little from her debut EP L O V E , she started her solo career on May 19, 2017.

Life

Kirstin Taylor Maldonado was born to a Spanish-Italian mother and a Mexican father and was raised by her mother in Arlington, Texas . As a four-year show choir member, she played numerous roles in local stage productions, where she met Mitch Grassi, a future member of Pentatonix. When she was eight, she sang at her mother's wedding reception and ultimately convinced her to sign her up for singing lessons. During her eight years as a stage actress at the Arlington Theater, she developed her singing and performance skills. She first attended the "Holy Rosary Catholic School" and later the "Martin High School" (Arlington, Texas), where she met Scott Hoying. During this time her classical training began and she was a member of the Texas All State Choir for three years. The three friends founded an a cappella trio and made at the school attracted attention by familiar songs coverten . Maldonado graduated from Martin High School in 2010 and then moved to the University of Oklahoma, where she studied music theater . There she resigned to devote herself to her career at Pentatonix.

Pentatonix

In 2011, Maldonado was contacted by her high school boyfriend, Scott Hoying, who was trying to assemble a group for the NBC show 's a cappella competition, The Sing-Off. Together with Mitch Grassi, another high school friend, they formed the a cappella group Pentatonix with Avi Kaplan and Kevin Olusola and took part in the third season of the competition, which they eventually won. Since then, they have released several albums and EPs and toured the world. As a member of Pentatonix, Maldonado has won three Grammy Awards .

On February 8, 2015, Pentatonix won a Grammy in the category "Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A-cappella" for their song "Daft Punk", a year later in the same category for "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" and in 2017 in the category "Best Country duo / group performance" with their song "Jolene", feat. Dolly Parton.

Further projects and appearances

In May 2014 Maldonado performed together with Scott Alan with the song "Never Neverland" at the Golders Green Hippodrome in North London. In January 2016, Maldonado sang the song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" at the World Dog Awards in honor of the dogs who played the role of Toto in the story of the Wizard of Oz .

In the film Pitch Perfect 2 , Maldonado played a Canadian group of participants in the final round with Pentatonix 2015.

In February 2016 the a cappella group Voctave released the video "Disney Love Medley" with Maldonado and her fiancé Jeremy Michael Lewis. In May 2016, Maldonado appeared together with Grassi and Hoying in an episode of the TV series Bones . Maldonado played the role of Liz Dervan, a member of the college a cappella group "The Gingersnaps".

On May 19, 2017, Maldonado released their first solo single "Break a Little" along with a music video. Her debut EP "LOVE" was released on July 14, 2017.

Private

As of May 29, 2016, Kirstin Maldonado was engaged to singer Jeremy Michael Lewis. However, the two split up shortly before the wedding.
