The Basel St. Johann railway station is one of six stations in the city of Basel . It is located in the St. Johann district near the north bypass and is operated by SBB . The first railway station of Basel was not in 1844 also in St. Johann quarter before the former city walls, but at the current location. From 1845 the station of the Elsässerbahn was at Schällemätteli . For the direct connection to the Swiss railway network, the route from today's St. Johann station was changed again from 1860 and the terminus of the French line was relocated to Basel SNCF station.

Because only the regional trains of the TER Alsace line 15 serve the station, it has the reputation of a ghost station . However, since the beginning of 2009 the station has been directly connected to the tram network (lines 1 and 21) of the Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe (BVB) with a stop in front of the main building . The train line runs from Basel SNCF station in the direction of Saint-Louis / Mulhouse and reaches St. Johann station in around five minutes.
