Grand Casino Basel

The Grand Casino Basel is one of the eight A casinos in Switzerland . It is located in Basel-St. Johann in close proximity to the French border.

The building

The client and operator is Airport Casino Basel AG , which Burckhardt und Partner commissioned with the construction, which was completed in 2003. The cubic structure has a closed, two-layer facade: In front of the red-colored thermal insulation, an outer skin made of glass is placed at a distance of 8 cm, which was also designed with a red pattern print. LED lights in this space make the building shimmer at night. The only larger opening is the entrance facing away from the street.

The legally prescribed reception with entrance control is followed by several large open gaming rooms, around which the serving rooms are located. The four-story building cube above ground shows only about a third of the total building volume, the rest - on a triangular floor plan - extends five-story into the ground.

Raid

On Sunday morning, March 28, 2010, the Grand Casino was raided by a group of ten men armed with submachine guns and pistols. Several 100,000 francs were stolen. Several of the 600 guests at the time were slightly injured. Several shots were fired. The perpetrators were never caught.
