Until 1806 the property belonged to the Order of St. John . Between 1845 and 1868 the area of today's St. Johanns Park served as the cemetery of the Basel Citizens Hospital. In 1870 the city slaughterhouse was built on the adjacent property. This existed until 1970.

In 1886 the building department of Basel-Stadt handed the area over to the municipal gardening company and in 1888 the first greenhouse was opened in Basel.

When the city nursery moved to the Brüglinger Ebene , the “Interest Group Old City Gardening” (IGAS) received the area for temporary use until 1985. Later it became an illegal occupation which ended on July 21, 1988 with a police eviction.

In 1988 over 1000 graves were uncovered and in 1992 St. Johanns Park was opened. In 2012 there was a partial redesign with a new playground and park café.
