The Olympic victory of the Australian short tracker Steven Bradbury was one of the strangest in Olympic history. Bradbury only managed to qualify for the semi-finals and finals because other athletes fell on the last corner. In the final, Bradbury was way behind on the last lap; But since another athlete fell in the last corner and pulled everyone except Bradbury away, he was able to cross the finish line unhindered. He was the first Australian gold medalist at the Winter Games.
