Battenheim (Alsatian Bàttene ) is a French commune with 1,587 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ).

geography

The village is located in the south of the Upper Rhine Plain in the Ill am Quatelbach area , five kilometers south of Ensisheim , 10 kilometers northeast of Mulhouse and around 15 kilometers west of the Rhine , which forms the border with Germany. The department road 201 Basel with the Route A35 ( L'Alsacienne ) at the level of Meyenheim (terminal 30) connects through the town from south to north.

history

A settlement at this location is first mentioned in 817 under the name Batenheim .

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Battenheim belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the district of Mulhouse in the district of Upper Alsace .

Attractions

The Saint-Imier church dates from different building periods: the nave is from the 18th century, the choir and tower are from the Gothic period . Inside there is a baroque high altar and a large organ from 1702, which was restored in 1989.
