Wittenheim (Alsatian Wittene ) is a French commune with 14,317 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Mulhouse and is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the canton of the same name .

geography

The town of Wittenheim, which is characterized by potash mining , is only a few kilometers northwest of Mulhouse . The Schönensteinbach Monastery once existed near Wittenheim . The local coat of arms refers to the former affiliation to front Austria .
