Wahlbach is a French commune with 497 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Mulhouse , the canton of Brunstatt and the municipality of Saint-Louis Agglomération .
geography
The municipality of Wahlbach is located around 15 kilometers south of Mulhouse and 20 kilometers northwest of Basel in the Pays de Sierentz landscape in the Walbach valley , which flows through the 6.41 km² municipal area in an east-west direction. The village is south of the stream .
Neighboring communities of Wahlbach are Steinbrunn-le-Haut in the north, Rantzwiller in the northeast, Zaessingue in the east, Franconia in the southeast, Hundsbach in the south, Hausgauen in the southwest, Heiwiller in the west and Obermorschwiller in the northwest.
history
Archaeological finds show that the area was already settled in the Neolithic . It is located on an old Celtic trade route that connected Altkirch to Sierentz via Emlingen . The municipality was first mentioned in a document in 1265 under the name Walpach or Wahlpach , which indicates that a Gallo-Roman population persisted even after the Great Migration . Until the French Revolution it belonged to the Altkirch dominion in the county of Pfirt .

Wahlbach recorded a sharp population decline from the end of the 19th century until the 1970s . In the year of the Peace of Frankfurt 488 people lived in the community, in 1975 there were only 189. Since then the development has been reversed. According to the municipality, 430 people lived in Wahlbach in 2007.
Attractions
The bell tower of the parish church of Saint-Maurice, Saint-Laurent dates from the 13th century, the nave is dated to 1771. It was a branch church of the Hundsbach community until 1780 and is equipped with an organ from 1839.
Economy and Infrastructure
Wahlbach is predominantly agricultural.
The D 19b trunk road runs through Wahlbach and connects the community with Altkirch and Sierentz .
