Zaessingue (German Zässingen ) is a French commune with 378 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Mulhouse , the canton of Brunstatt and the municipal association of Saint-Louis Agglomération .
geography
The municipality of Zaessingue is located in Sundgau , around 20 kilometers south of Mulhouse and twelve kilometers east of Altkirch .
Neighboring communities of Zaessingue are Rantzwiller in the north, Kœtzingue in the northeast, Magstatt-le-Haut in the east, Helfrantzkirch in the southeast, Jettingen in the south, Franconia in the southwest and Wahlbach in the west.
history
A noble family Zaessingue is documented from the year 1222. However, the ending leaves -ingen the establishment of Zaessingen suspect. It is assumed that localities with names ending in -ingen or -heim were founded by Alemanni . Until the French Revolution the village belonged to the county of Pfirt .
Since the 13th century churches like the Leonhardskirche and the Peterskirche in Basel as well as the Johanniter in Mulhouse had possessions in Zaessingue.
From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Zaessingue belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the district of Mulhouse in the district of Upper Alsace .

Attractions
The nave of the church in Zaessingue, consecrated to Saints Peter and Paul, was built in 1763. The choir, tower and sacristy date from 1772. In the interior are the statues of the two patron saints. The 19th century main altar is decorated with paintings of the Nativity and the Resurrection. The baptismal font from 1614 has chiseled floral motifs. The organ by Jean Francois Verschneider from 1881 is still in its original condition.
The town hall and school building was built in 1847.
