Gravestones in the Jewish cemetery in Hégenheim

The Hégenheim Jewish Cemetery in the French community of Hégenheim (German Hegenheim ) in the Haut-Rhin department in Alsace is on the road to Hagenthal-le-Bas .

history

The cemetery was built in 1673 and expanded in 1692. Further enlargements took place until 1899, so that it covers an area of around two hectares. Its size is explained by the fact that the dead from the surrounding Jewish communities and the city of Basel were also buried here. This did not allow the burial of Jews on their territory until 1903. The cemetery has about 8000 graves. About 2800 tombstones are still preserved. During the Nazi era , the cemetery was to be used as a football field, but this plan was abandoned due to the unevenness of the site.
