Jewish cemetery (Jungholtz)
The Jüdisches Friedhof Jungholtz is a Jewish cemetery in the French community Jungholtz (German Jungholz ) in the Haut-Rhin department in Alsace ( Grand Est region ). It lies between the Rue des Tuiles and the Rue du Château and is considered the best preserved old Jewish cemetery in the Haut-Rhin department.
history
The cemetery, which was laid out in the middle of the 17th century, initially only served as a burial place for Jews from Jungholtz, Ribeauvillé , Soultz and Guebwiller . In the period that followed, the deceased from Jewish communities came from a wide area, so that the cemetery had to be expanded several times.
Between 1940 and 1945 - under German occupation - the cemetery was devastated. Around four hundred tombstones were destroyed in the process. In 1952, a memorial was erected in the cemetery to commemorate the Jews deported from the region .
