Profane synagogue in Hégenheim

The synagogue in Hégenheim , a French commune in the Haut-Rhin department of the historic Alsace region , was built in 1821. The secular synagogue is at number 4, rue d'Alsace.

history

A synagogue built around 1740 was looted and set on fire in a pogrom in 1815 . In 1821 a new synagogue was built. In the second half of the 19th century, the number of parishioners fell sharply due to the heavy migration to the cities. That is why the synagogue was no longer used after the First World War and was then used as a workshop. It was sold in 2020 and is set to become a cultural center.
