history
Jews have been attested in Thann since the 13th century. The importance of the Jewish community is evident in the 19th century through the existence of the Thann Rabbinate .
In 1818 a barn was converted into a synagogue. Today's synagogue in Thann was built in 1862 on the site of this older building. During the First World War , the synagogue was partially destroyed by German bombing and rebuilt in 1924.
In the era of National Socialism , the building was ransacked. After 1945 the synagogue was restored, the last time it was extensively renovated in the 1970s.
The synagogue, built in the Moorish style, is only rarely used for worship .
