Apse of the synagogue in Mulhouse

The synagogue in Mulhouse , a city in Alsace , was built between 1847 and 1849. The synagogue has been protected as an architectural monument ( Monument historique ) since 1984 .

history

Jews can be documented for the first time in Mülhausen in 1290. When the city belonged to the Swiss Confederation between 1515 and 1798 , Jewish families were not allowed to settle. In the 19th century, Mulhouse became the center of the Jewish population in the surrounding area.

By 1822 there were gradually several prayer rooms in Mulhouse, because the Jewish community was not allowed to build its own synagogue building. In 1822 the first synagogue was finally built on Rue Sainte-Claire. It was replaced by the synagogue that still exists today and was inaugurated on December 13, 1849.

time of the nationalsocialism

The synagogue only survived the German occupation undestroyed on the outside, because inside everything was removed and even the parquet floor was torn out.

architecture

The synagogue was built according to the plans of the architect Jean-Baptiste Schacre in the classical style and rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century. At that time, two portals were added on the apse side and a staircase to the galleries was built. This facade of the synagogue is characterized by many decorative elements: reliefs show the menorah and an acroterion adorns the top of the gable.

In April 2010, a short circuit caused a fire that destroyed the roof structure and the galleries.
