The synagogue in Altkirch , a French town in the Haut-Rhin department of the historic Alsace region , was built between 1834 and 1837. The building, included in the inventory of cultural heritage, is at 3 rue de Ferrette.

history

Jews were already resident in Altkirch in the 14th century. After being expelled under Duke Leopold IV. In 1397/98, they were only able to resettle again in the 18th century. From 1844 Altkirch was the seat of a rabbinate .

The synagogue in Altkirch was built between 1834 and 1837 on the site of a previous building. It was looted and devastated during the anti-Jewish riots during the Revolution of 1848 . It was rebuilt in 1850.

After the deportation of the Jewish residents in 1940, the synagogue was used as a cinema. From 1950 church services could take place again . Due to the small number of Jewish residents, the synagogue is only used on special holidays.

architecture

The reconstruction and renovation in 1850 was directed by the architect Jean-Baptiste Schacre . The synagogue is a hall building with galleries on three sides . The edging of the arched windows made of colored sandstone accentuate the facade. The east-facing Torah shrine is located on the street side and is decorated with the tablets of the law on the outside .

The Hebrew inscription above the portal on the west side reads: For all peoples may go, each one in the name of his God; but we want to go in the name of the Eternal, our God . ( Micah 4,5)
