The ČSD U 44.101 was a narrow-gauge tank locomotive of the Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD). It corresponded to the Type 35b from Krauss in Munich .

history

The U 44.1 series machine was one of several four-axle uniform narrow-gauge tank locomotives that were delivered by Krauss in Munich in 1916 under the factory designation 35b to various works railways in the period before the First World War for different tasks.

A locomotive with four driven axles was the only option for handling larger loads so as not to exceed the permissible axle load. In contrast to the U 44.0 series , which was also supplied to the Borzsatalbahn , this locomotive did not have Klien-Lindner hollow axles . The most obvious difference to the Maffei locomotive is that the U 44.1 series has an inner frame. This means that the locomotive can only be used for a larger radius of 45 m, but it should have been much more robust in maintaining the drive.

The War Ministry ordered four locomotives of the factory type 35 b for the former Uzhhorod - Radwanka forest railway . Due to war reasons, only two machines could be delivered. A locomotive was built by the ku k. Army railway confiscated, the other was used by the Czechoslovak Railway Regiment. This machine came to the ČSD after 1918.

The locomotive used by the ČSD was until 1937 on the forest railway Uzhhorod - Radwanka and to 1944 on the Borzsatalbahn in use.

After being used by the ČSD, it was adopted by the MÁV as the 494.0 series . In a photo it can be seen in 1961 at the boiler house in Békéscsaba .

A locomotive from the same manufacturer from the same year of construction has been retained by the Railway Friends of Club 760 . The locomotive was delivered to the Hungarian Bank and Trading Company in Budapest in 1917 under the factory number 7194 and was probably only used on forest railways in Romania . The machine is now at the Murtalbahn .
