Canal de Huningue
The Canal de Huningue (German: Hüningen Canal ) is a shipping canal in the Grand Est region , France, completed in 1828 .
history
It was originally a connecting canal of the Canal du Rhône au Rhin with the Rhine , which branched off in Mulhouse , led to Hüningen on the Rhine and, in addition to shipping, also served to supply the canal with water.
After the construction of the Rhine canal (French: Grand Canal d'Alsace ), the northern section of the Canal du Rhône au Rhin between Mulhouse and Strasbourg was closed. Since then, all shipping traffic has been carried over the former branch canal to Niffer , where it joins the Rhine canal . This section (also known as the Kembs-Niffer branch canal ) was expanded for large shipping (Grand Gabarit) and is now part of the Canal du Rhône au Rhin.
On the remainder of the Canal de Huningue , which is 15 kilometers long and runs parallel to the Rhine canal between Niffer and Hüningen, all four locks were closed in 1962. From Niffer you can still reach the Kembs leisure harbor with pleasure boats on the lock-free section of the canal . The rest of the canal can only be used in sections with canoes and rowing boats. There are still some bascule bridges over the canal.

environment
The canal runs through the floodplain of the old Rhine, where the Petite Camargue Alsacienne nature reserve (Réserve naturelle) was established in 1982 and is visited by many tourists.
Hüningen wild water park
In the city of Hüningen itself, the port of the canal, which had been fallow since 1962, was expanded into the artificial white water reserve Parc des Eaux Vives from 1992 to 1993 . The canal bed was significantly redesigned, around 50,000 m³ of material moved and artificial, sometimes variable obstacles built into the course of the river. The average level of difficulty is level II, in places (e.g. input wave) level III. Parallel to the 350 m long whitewater canal, a canal runs back to the weir, on which canoeists can paddle back and only have a short transfer route. The operator of the white water park is the city of Hüningen.
