The Wetzlarer Kreuz is a motorway junction in Hessen near Wetzlar . It connects the federal highway 45 ( Sauerland line ; E 40 , E 41 ) with the federal highway 480 ( Gießener Ring ). It is the only motorway junction in Germany that is completely built in the elaborate " Maltese shape ".

geography

The motorway junction is located in the urban area of Wetzlar in the Lahn-Dill district , on the city limits to Aßlar . The closest districts are Blasbach , Hermannstein and Naunheim , part of Wetzlar, as well as the Aßlar city center. It is located about 5 km north of Wetzlar city center, about 13 km west of Gießen and about 45 km southeast of Siegen .

The Wetzlarer Kreuz has junction number 29 on the A 45 and number 2 on the A 480.

history

The Wetzlarer Kreuz was built in the early 1980s with the construction of the 3.7 km long section of the interrupted A 480, which is part of the planned eastern extension of the A 48 . This section begins at the federal highway 277 ( junction Aßlar ) and ends around 1.2 km north of the motorway junction at the provisional junction in Blasbach .

Design and state of development

The A 45 has four lanes, with the Dortmund carriageway running in three lanes only on a 3.7 km long section between the Wetzlar car park and the intersection. The A 480 has four lanes south of the junction. To the north, the preliminary work for the A 480 is laid out in four lanes, but the lane swings to the north at the cross on the opposite lane and is led in two lanes without separate lanes to the end of the motorway and meets the L 3053 in a right curve 520 m further to the northeast.

As the only " Maltese Cross " in Germany, the Wetzlar Cross is of particular importance. It is also noteworthy that the A 45, which runs over the 370 m long Engelsbachtal bridge, crosses all connecting ramps without exception , which is topologically determined. Although the structure with its total of seven bridges and the ramps designed for high speeds was built with great effort, it is of little importance in terms of traffic. The connecting ramps are rarely used, as the majority of the traffic (> 90%) is on the A 45.

Traffic volume

The cross is used by around 65,000 vehicles every day.
