The Gießener Nordkreuz is a motorway junction in the northeast of the city of Gießen in Hesse . It connects the federal highways A 480 and A 485 as well as the federal highway 3 and is part of the Gießener Ring . The shape of the cross is very unusual. It consists of a western and an eastern part, each designed as a motorway triangle in the form of a "left-hand trumpet", and an intersection without connecting ramps . In addition, the junction “Gießen-Marburger Straße” is located within the cross .
The A 485 begins at the western part of the motorway junction and after one kilometer leads to the eastern part of the junction, through which the southern part of the A 485 and the B 3 form the continuous relation. Since the B 3 does not have a direct connection to the A 480, the routing from the northern part of the B 3 and the southern part of the A 485 to the eastern section of the A 480 is quite complicated.
The A 480 is part of the abandoned planning for the extension of the A 48 and the A 485 is part of the A 49 planning, which has also been abandoned . Both motorways and the federal highway, which is designed as a motorway-like road , have four lanes in the area of the motorway junction.
