Wetzlar-Ost is the name for the intersection of the A 45, which runs from south to north, and the B 49, which runs from east to west . The B 49 has four lanes in this area, but has no hard shoulder and has structurally separate lanes, which is why the junction is more like a motorway junction .
It handles the traffic from the autobahn to the inner cities of Wetzlar and Gießen and to the municipality of Lahnau , which is located directly at this junction. The B 49 runs as a motor road from Gießen to Limburg .
The unfinished sections of the A 4 and A 480 autobahns mean that three European roads also lead via the Wetzlar-Ost junction. These are the European route 40 coming from Calais in France towards Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan , the E 41 from Dortmund to Altdorf in Switzerland and the E 44 from Le Havre in France to Giessen.
As a result, this junction for a motorway intersection is heavily loaded. It is used by around 90,000 vehicles every day.
