history

The Upper German Limes runs through the area of Pohlheim (to the north are Hausen, Watzenborn-Steinberg and Garbenteich; south to Grüningen, Dorf-Güll and Holzheim). The name Pohlheim can be traced back to the former village "Pfahlheim", which in turn refers to the Limes ("village on the piles").

The name Garbenteich can be traced back to "Garwards Eich". The northern villages belonged to the jurisdiction of Hüttenberg in the Middle Ages , the southern to the Gambach office (pledged to Solms in 1464). Holzheim was first mentioned in a document in 790, Grüningen and Dorf Güll in 799, Hausen 886 and the youngest Garbenteich and Watzenborn ("Wazenburne") in 1141. Grüningen already had city rights in the Middle Ages - as the only one of the earlier individual communities - since 1400 .

To the north of Pohlheim, at the foot of the Schiffenberg, lies the Petersweiher settlement in Giessen, founded in the 1960s .

On September 4, 1974, Pohlheim was named a town.

Church building

The municipality of Pohlheim was founded on December 31, 1970 as part of the regional reform in Hesse through the voluntary amalgamation of the municipalities of Dorf-Güll , Garbenteich , Grüningen , Hausen , Holzheim and Watzenborn-Steinberg . The name Pohlheim goes to a central location in the municipality in the Thirty Years' War sunken back village. Local districts with local advisory councils and local councilors were formed for all former municipalities in accordance with the Hessian municipal code.

Religions

The population of Central Hesse is predominantly Protestant . In 1954/1955 the Christ Church was built in Watzenborn-Steinberg and consecrated on July 24, 1955. The first parish existed in the place as early as 1606/1607. The old church was probably built as the first church in the area of today's city of Pohlheim in 1141, near the founding of the Schiffenberg monastery . It was extensively renovated in 2006. There are several historic village churches in the districts, such as the Evangelical Reformed Church of Dorf-Güll (1737), the Evangelical Church of Garbenteich (12th century), the Evangelical Church of Grüningen (12th-16th century) and the Evangelical Church Hausen (13th century) and the Evangelical Reformed Church in Holzheim (1632).

After the Second World War, many Catholic expellees also moved to the villages of Pohlheim. During this time, the St. Hedwig Chapel was founded in Hausen. After the new construction of the Catholic Church of St. Martin in Watzenborn-Steinberg, it was sold to a Syrian Orthodox religious community. After the abandoned St. Hedwig Chapel was demolished, the Syrian Orthodox Church Mor Had'Bschabo was built on the same site in 2013 . The Mor Barsaumo church in Garbenteich was completed in 1999 , and there is a third Aramaic community in Watzenborn-Steinberg.

The church life of Pohlheim is shaped by the Free Protestant Community Pohlheim and the Evangelical City Mission , which is represented in three districts. There is also a New Apostolic Church in Watzenborn-Steinberg.
