Kart slalom

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kart slalom is the popular version of karting . Here, karts with four-stroke engines are driven against time on parking lots or similar paved areas on a course marked out with pylons . There is always only one driver on the track.

Kart slalom is mainly practiced by children and young people from 6 to 18 years of age. The original youth kart slalom was invented in the 1980s. However, there are now also areas where the upper age limits are open.

Classification

The kart slalom usually starts in classes. These classes are divided into age groups, and in the case of the Club Sport Kart Slalom / Kart 2000 division , according to the cubic capacity of the karts .

The division in the youth kart slalom is as follows:

class Age
K0 6 years (Berlin-Brandenburg, North Baden, Bavaria, Lower Saxony, Hesse / Thuringia)
K1 7–9 years All federal states
K2 10-11 years All federal states
K3 12–13 years All federal states
K4 14-15 years All federal states
K5 16-18 years All federal states
K6 older than 18 years (Hesse / Thuringia)

Championships

The championships take place on a regional and supraregional level. The most famous championship is the German championship of the dmsj. In addition, almost all sponsoring associations of the DMSB offer their own championships. The ADAC has a very similar championship in its program with the ADAC Federal Final. Similar to the German championship of the dmsj, the participants here qualify in regional preliminary decisions for participation. The DMV also has its own championship. In contrast to dmsj and ADAC, however, you drive a trial lap and 3 evaluation laps, of which the worst is deleted. This creates more tension and is generally fairer, since z. B. the weather no longer has such a big influence.

Implementation and evaluation

A youth kart slalom is carried out in three separate runs on a course, the first of which is a training run and the other two runs are included in the evaluation. Both the time and the mistakes made are counted. The errors, converted into seconds, are added to the driving time achieved and the driver with the lowest total time wins. There are 2 penalty seconds for a pylon error and 10 penalty seconds for omitting or driving incorrectly on a task. However, more than 99 penalty seconds can never be charged per race. In exceptional cases it can also lead to a disqualification. In addition to the individual evaluations in the classes, a team evaluation can also be carried out in which teams of four to five drivers compete and the points achieved by the best three drivers of a team are added up.

tasks

The course in the youth kart slalom consists of tasks in the form of pylons that have to be passed through without errors in the shortest possible time. These tasks must be set up at a distance of 4 meters to a maximum of 10 meters. It is still up to each organizer how to set up his course. According to the regulations, the course must be set up so that higher speeds cannot be achieved. The total length should be approx. 300–500 m.

The most important tasks are:

  • The gate: Two standing pylons next to each other at a distance of 1.65 m¹ must be driven through.
  • Swiss Slalom: A row of individual standing pylons that are in a row at a distance of four to ten meters.
  • Roundabout: the circle has an inner radius of 10 meters and must be driven through at least once. The entrance has a width of 3 m, the exit and the circle have the normal door width of 1.65 m¹.

"The new tasks" (added and an integral part of the ADAC and DMSB regulations since 2005):

  • Ypsilon: The lane is divided or merged.
  • S-Gasse: It consists of two pylon sides arranged like the letter "S".
  • Z-Lane: Three parallel lanes each, which are two to four meters apart. To get from one lane to the other, you have to turn the kart by 180 °.
  • Box: The pylons are arranged like a square, each with two openings with the normal door width. As an optional variant, the double box / chicane was added in 2017, in which two boxes are attached to each other and have to be passed through
  • Snail shell: Is a combination of two tasks: an alley and an imaginary circle. This task is run like a snail shell.
  • Cross: Two lanes cross.
  • Brezel: This task is the most complicated in terms of driving style. It looks like a mushroom with three openings.
  • Deutsches Eck: 90-degree curve, which, like the pretzel, is slightly defused on the inside.
  • Turn: A task in which three pylons stand next to each other and on which you perform a 180 or 90 degree turn. If all three pylons for this task fall over, the error is still counted as if only one pylon had fallen over. The organizer must either stipulate or release the direction in which the turn is to be avoided.
  • Alternating gate: This task consists of two pylon gates that are driven one after the other. The pylons of the exchange gate are in a straight line. The distance between the gates is at least 1.5 m and a maximum of 4 m.
  • "The Z": A task that consists of three alleys and a turn. The alleys are arranged in the shape of the letter "Z". There is a turn between the alleys, which is bypassed once by 235 °.

technology

Youth kart slalom is carried out with four-stroke karts with 160 cm³ displacement and 5.5  HP or 200 cm³ and 6.5 HP, which are provided by the organizer or the ADAC region. These are equipped with a transmission ratio of 1: 2.5. The track width on the rear axle is 1.25 m, with rain tires 1.15 to 1.25 m. Participants must wear clothing that covers their entire body (special kart overalls are often used), gloves, a full face helmet and sturdy shoes.

In the kart slalom 2000 and kart tournament, the participants compete with their own karts. Depending on the age of the driver, different engines are permitted, the rear track width is set to at least 1.25 m, the gear ratio is free, no differential, only direct steering and no sprung wheel suspension allowed. There is a list of approved tires from different manufacturers. The mixture must be medium-soft or harder. So it is driven with widely available commercial karts and self-construction is prohibited here. This information relates to the ADAC Hessen-Thüringen and the kart championship advertised by it - other districts may have different regulations.

For adult drivers there is a kart slalom championship in various ADAC regions with 270 and 390 cm³ four-stroke engines and 9 or 13 hp, the distances between the individual tasks are between 10 and 20 meters. The penalty time per fallen pylon is 3 seconds.
