Matara is a city in southern Sri Lanka (approx. 160 km from Colombo ) with 43,225 inhabitants (2005).

Matara is the southernmost city in the country. The Nilwala River flows through the city and flows into the Indian Ocean here . The city is located directly on the coast and has a sandy beach and rocky cliffs.

The place has a connection to the railway network of the Sri Lanka Railways . The University of Ruhuna is located here .

In Matara there is a shore connection of the SEA-ME-WE-5 - submarine cable .
