‣ Topic overview |
A frenulum piercing is a piercing through the frenulum (lingual frenulum) on which the lower, middle portion of the tongue is adherent to the floor of the mouth.
Jewellery
Both a barbell and a ball closure ring are suitable for use. Usually, particularly small piercing jewelry is used because there is not much tissue to pierce or stretch and larger jewelry can damage teeth and gums .
Healing and care
It's a simple piercing, both in the process of stinging and healing. The possibility of this piercing depends on the anatomy of the wearer and cannot be performed on everyone.
Like other mucous membrane piercings, the piercing often heals quickly and easily through the frenulum of the tongue. However, during this time alcohol , cigarettes and oral sex should be avoided and the mouth should be rinsed out after eating. In order to prevent increased plaque formation, special dental care is required even after it has healed completely.
Risks
The jewelry worn can come into contact with both the teeth and the gums, which can lead to permanent damage to the tooth enamel and regression of the gums. Improper placement of the piercing can hit the salivary gland below the tongue. As with other piercings in the mouth area, jewelry that opens can be swallowed. There is also the risk that the jewelry will be rejected by the body and grow out over a longer period of time.
