‣ Topic  overview

A lip band piercing (also called lip band piercing , frenulum or smiley , because it is only visible when you smile) is usually pierced through the frenulum that connects the upper lip in the middle with the gums and is therefore the opposite variant of the Frowny piercing , which is carried out by the smaller ribbon is pricked in the lower lip. The lip frenulum is thin, but relatively stable. Because it is made of mucosal tissue, it heals quickly and rarely becomes inflamed.

Healing and care

The lip band piercing is one of the most uncomplicated piercings. The healing time is one to two weeks. For disinfection - preferably after eating or smoking - you can use a spray or a rinse, but you should avoid high-percentage alcohol during this time.

Jewellery

Piercers usually use a horseshoe or a closed ring, which is made of titanium or surgical steel, as initial jewelry. A ball closure ring with a material thickness of up to 1.6 millimeters and the smallest possible inner diameter is suitable for use . However, the ring should not be thinner than 1.2 millimeters, otherwise there is a risk that the piercing will grow out during the healing process. For the Ball Closure Rings, clamping balls have been specially developed for the lip frenulum, which are flattened at the back to avoid possible tooth damage. From a dental point of view, this piercing is often not advised because if the ring is too large, the jewelry rests on the incisors. Usually, however, this is on the gums above. There it does not leave any permanent damage, but small impressions of the ball are possible, but these disappear again with a short piercing abstinence. The use of a barbell is also possible . Although this cannot be worn visibly as jewelry, as it is covered by the upper lip, the risk of any damage is much lower.

Problems

The lip band piercing hardly hurts or does not hurt at all when pricked. It grows completely closed within 30 minutes. If you have had the piercing for a few years, it will not grow over as fast as it did at the beginning. Tearing of the lip frenulum cannot be ruled out when pricking. However, in this case it usually grows back together within one to two weeks.

Damage to teeth is common. Since the bone lying under the gingiva can be damaged even if the piercing is carefully positioned , a lip frenulum piercing is not recommended from a dental perspective. The reason lies in the thin lamellae of the bone that tapers in the labially. Due to the pressure atrophy of the ball or the ring, this lamella can degrade bit by bit. The result is not clearly visible at first. Since the gingiva slowly follows the bone, a "longer" tooth is created over time. Under certain circumstances, however, the gingiva also remains stationary, with the disadvantage that a so-called "gingival pocket" now forms. This in turn offers a larger niche for bacterial colonization, so that in turn the bone lamella breaks down. In this case, chronic periodontitis develops .
