Gießen – Gelnhausen railway line
The Gießen – Gelnhausen railway is a single-track, non- electrified main line in Hesse that is part of the federal railway network ( DB Netz ). It runs from Giessen via Hungen , Nidda and Büdingen to Gelnhausen . The traffic line on the route is now marketed as the Lahn-Kinzig-Bahn .
history
The railway was planned since 1862, it was built and operated by the Oberhessische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft and it was opened in several stages:
date | Beginning of section | End of section | length |
---|---|---|---|
12/29/1869 | to water | Hunger | 21.83 km |
06/29/1870 | Hunger | Nidda | 13.23 km |
10/30/1870 | Nidda | Büdingen | 19.79 km |
11/30/1870 | Büdingen | Gelnhausen | 14.91 km |
The extension to Partenstein on the Main-Spessart-Bahn (Bavarian Ludwigs-Westbahn ) was no longer possible. However, the route gained in importance from 1888 onwards through the connection of some branch lines to the Vogelsberg and the Wetterau .
The Upper Hessian Railway Company was taken over by the Hessian State Railways in 1876 , which in turn merged with the Prussian State Railways in 1896 to form the Prussian-Hessian Railway Community.
A double-track expansion was not implemented, although various engineering structures - such as the two tunnels - were prepared for double-track operation.
business
The route is currently served by passenger trains ( GTW 2/6 ) from HLB Hessenbahn GmbH, a company of the Hessian State Railway , on behalf of the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV). In the current timetable year 2019/2020, there is one journey approximately every hour in each direction. According to a new tender , new LINT 41 vehicles are to be used from the 2022/2023 timetable change .
For timetable change 2003/2004 on 14 December 2003, the weekend and holiday traffic was resumed. In addition, the Nidda – Glauburg – Büdingen – Gelnhausen section is served in the mornings and evenings by the 374 buses. Until the 2009/2010 timetable change, this line was still called 610 and served the entire route from Gelnhausen to Gießen. Early or late working commuters in particular have advantages with this bus line.
future
In Pohlheim, instead of the existing Garbenteich train stop, two new train stops are to be built in Hausen and Garbenteich near the cemetery. 200 new passengers are expected as a result of the measure, the benefits are greater than the costs. The draft for the Germany-Takt provides for trains to meet at approximately the level of Pohlheim-Pfahlgraben.
Lich is aiming to build a new Lich West stop , as the city has mainly expanded to the west.
In Gießen there are considerations to put a new train stop at the level of the Aulweg into operation and to relocate the Erdkauter Weg train stop a little out of town at the height of Ferniestrasse if a new underpass is built there. The aim of the relocation is to maintain the connection to bus line 10.
As part of the planned four-track expansion of the Kinzig Valley Railway, it is planned to reactivate the station in Lieblos. Furthermore, an ESTW-A will be set up in Lieblos in this context .
particularities
The station Pfahlgraben, a depot without passengers , is located near the Upper Germanic Limes , World Heritage of UNESCO . The Limes, which is no longer visible there, is crossed twice between Hungen and Ober-Widdersheim .
In addition to the Büdinger tunnel , which passes under a western branch of the Großer Reffenkopf , the Effolderbach tunnel is also on the route.
