The Elbsee is a quarry pond created by gravel in Düsseldorf-Unterbach on the city limits of Hilden .

history

After the end of the gravel work in 2006 and the removal of some dams through the gravel works, the lake area today is approx. 89  hectares with a maximum depth of 22 m. The lake has no surface inflows or outflows and is fed by groundwater. Large parts of the lake shore are officially inaccessible and thus enable a species-rich flora and fauna. The view of the lake is only allowed from a few places on the surrounding hiking trails.

The south-western part of the lake and the adjacent forest form the Dreiecksweiher nature reserve. In the north, the Elbsee is separated from the recreational area of Unterbacher See by the A 46 .

On August 14, 2010, the northern part of the Elbsee was also placed under nature protection due to its great importance for the biotope function. The nutrient-poor water body is of particular ecological importance. In the lime-rich, nutrient-poor still water, among other things, candelabrum algae , dark luster algae and shiny spawn herb can be found . The north bank with shallow water zone and reed beds as well as the central island are primarily ornithological. There are other rare animal and plant species, for example sand martin , little ringed plover , lapwing , dune tiger beetle , swallowtail and common centaury . In winter the Elbsee is an important habitat for migrating, resting and hibernating bird species nationwide. Over 70 species of birds, including rare and endangered species, have been observed.

use

A 7.5 m high observation tower has stood on the south bank since 1998 and is used to observe nature.

On the eastern shore of the lake there is a new water sports center, which has been established in 2003 and which is home to diving, canoeing, surfing and sailing clubs and the DLRG.

Immediately to the north is a commercial wellness center . The site was sold to a Cologne entrepreneur in 2013 by the municipal real estate subsidiary IDR. The groundbreaking ceremony was held in 2015. It was opened on February 20, 2017.
