life and work

Georg Saldens uncle was a book designer . This is how he came into contact with the various aspects of typeface design at a young age. From 1950 to 1954 Salden studied at the Folkwang University in the Ruhr Area (in short: Folkwang University ) in Essen . From 1972 he worked in his own advertising graphic office. During this time, Salden designed the Daphne and Transit fonts for H. Berthold AG . From 1972 Salden worked exclusively for various companies. For Photo Transit he created 35 font families with 160 sets and 6 text families. Around 50 sets were designed for light typesetting and 60 sets for digital typesetting. The companies involved were able to use the fonts exclusively. The most famous fonts created during this period are the Polo GST , Brasil GST , Planet GST , Gordon GST and the Basta GST . Salden has been marketing its fonts independently since 1995. These can be obtained from the TypeManufactur.com font label.

Salden has been a member of ATypI since 1972, a founding member of the GST group since 1973, a member of the Context Society for Typesetting Technology and Typography since 1979 and a member of the Forum for Typography since 1983.

Balances prefers the traditional creation of fonts. All of his fonts were designed and drawn by hand by him. His fonts are characterized by extraordinary precision, sharpness and quality craftsmanship. Balden criticizes the increasing lack of level in font design nowadays.

Salden lives in Heiligenhaus .
