Polo GST

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Polo GST is a font designed by Georg Salden . The Polo GST is used by the CSU , E.ON and Ernst Klett Verlag as a corporate typeface and by the magazines PAGE (until the end of 2007), mare and the Sunday newspaper Sonntag Aktuell as a text typeface. The Polo GST was uniquely designed at the time of its creation. Their design has significantly influenced the development of new fonts.

Emergence

The GST Polo was developed by Georg Salden from 1972 to 1976. Originally the font was only available for the H. Berthold AG typesetting machines .

The abbreviation GST stands for "Georg Salden Typography". Since Georg Salden only sells his fonts himself, the font can only be obtained from the TypeManufactur.com font label.

Controversy over the Polo GST and possible counterfeits

Salden criticizes the fact that Erik Spiekermann adopted design elements from Polo GST when creating the FF Meta ; fonts by Lucas de Groot and Ole Schäfer also showed characteristics of his typefaces.

Spiekermann described Saldens Polo GST as a source of inspiration for FF Meta ; the FF Meta is not a copy. With the Polo GST , Salden was the first to convincingly solve various typographical problems. The FF Meta have - like many other sans serif fonts - some of these design solutions adopted.

Classification of the script

  • According to DIN 16518 , GST - Polo is categorized in group VIb (sans serif linear antiqua with Renaissance character) .
