Alice Thormählen

Alice Marcelle Thormählen (* 6. April 1928 in Heiligenhaus ; † 19th March 2020 ibid) was a German entrepreneur , who as patron and benefactor to their low bergische has made home deserves.

Life and career

Thormählen was the daughter of the Heiligenhauser entrepreneur Ernst Woelm, who initially developed products for aircraft construction . Her mother was Belgian , the middle name Marcelle is a reminiscence of this origin. Thormählen actually wanted to study languages after the war , but couldn't get a place. After working in Switzerland and France, at the request of her father, she joined the accounting department of the conveyor technology company he co-founded ; from the 1950s onwards she worked for a long time as managing director and partner in important companies in this and the local building hardware industry. In 1962 she married the hotelier and industrial master Hans Joachim Thormählen († 2012). The marriage remained childless. The couple is buried in the cemetery of the Protestant parish in Heiligenhaus.

Thormählen was a longstanding member of the CDU .

Non-profit and charitable work

Her father was already a promoter of the work of parishes, cultural institutions and nature conservation projects. Alice Thormählen has supported numerous projects and plans with a wide range of recipients throughout her life with a total of several million euros . These included the Lebenshilfe , parents' initiatives to support children with cancer , the German Red Cross , the Tafel , AWO , scholarships for students on the Heiligenhaus campus of the Bochum University of Applied Sciences , help for refugees , church communities, sports and choral clubs, right up to equipping public schools and building projects in their home.

In 2008 she and her husband founded the alice and hans joachim thormählen foundation for education, culture and sport, which is primarily aimed at young people.

  • 2012 Honorary Award “Humanly Engaged” from the CDU Women's Union
  • 2017 Name of a newly created park in Heiligenhaus as "Thormählen Park"
  • In 2017, a building she financed to promote culture and education, which, among other things, houses the city library, was named after her as the “Thormählen-Bildungshaus” in Heiligenhaus.
