Chapel of St. James Abbot's Kitchen in Heiligenhaus

The St. Jakobus Chapel in Heiligenhaus - Hetterscheidt was built and consecrated in 1908/09. The listed chapel is located directly opposite the Abtskücher pond and is today a branch church of the St. Suitbertus parish in Heiligenhaus. It has a certain independence, since in Hetterscheidt there existed a Catholic parish oriented towards the Essen-Werden Abbey long before a parish was founded in Heiligenhaus.

history

The chapel, built in 1908/09, was not the first church in the abbot's kitchen. The turret on the half-timbered house right next door shows that there was a chapel there before. This half-timbered house was built as a school in 1783 and received an extension in 1792, which - no longer visible today - extended the main school room with an apse. This enlarged room was consecrated as a chapel in 1792. Their bell, which still rings in the chapel tower of St. James, bears the inscription:

"Ad Laudem Dei, Jacob Claren in Cologne fecit anno 1792"

"To the praise of God, Jacob Claren made me in Cologne in 1792"

The settlement of the Hetterscheidt area can be traced back to the 9th century. The Hetterscheidt estate was bequeathed to the Werden monastery (today Essen ) in 847 . In the 10th century the abbey divided its property into one belonging to the convent (fathers and friars) and one belonging to the abbot, who was also Prince of the Empire. The income from the Oberhof Hetterscheidt was assigned to the abbot. In the 14th century the expression "des abts kuchen" (abbot kitchen) appeared for the first time. The abbot used the "uppermost house" as documented, which was called the "slot" (castle) from the 15th century. When Abbot Konrad von Gleichen was finally banished here, Hetterscheidt Castle may also have had a chapel. It is documented that

  • Abbot Johann von Groningen had the chapel expanded in 1525,
  • 1537 an altarpiece was purchased by Master Simon,
  • 1719 Abbot Theodor Thier inaugurated a new altar there,
  • In 1759 the chapel collapsed.

From 1614 at the latest, a community service was held in the palace chapel by a member of the Werden convent. The parish belonged to the parish of Werden Abbey, ie to the parish church of St. Clemens in Born, which was set up for the southern area of Werdens. After the dissolution of Werden Abbey in the secularization of 1802/03, it was disputed whether the parish belonged to the parish of St. Clemens or to the parish of St. Jakobus in Homberg. The community felt that it belonged to St. Jakobus, even when it was assigned to the parish in Velbert in 1838. Therefore the chapel bears the patronage of St. James. In 1909 the chapel congregation was assigned to the now established parish of Heiligenhaus.

The chapel, built in neo-Romanesque style, was completely renovated in 2004. The church painter Dieter Hartmann designed the choir space in color to match the Romanesque churches, using modern patterns and symbols. The altar table, ambo and stele of the tabernacle are made of light-colored, roughly hewn sandstone. A crucifix from Val Gardena, modeled on the Romanesque triumphal cross, hangs above the altar, a foundation of pastor Norbert Goldenberg, who worked here for many years. Foundations by parishioners are also the windows, lecture cross, light holder in the chancel and the organ.

The relics embedded in the altar table have been transferred from an altar consecrated in the castle chapel in 1719. The certificate reads:

Front:

"1719, June 13th. Hoc… altaris consecravit reverendissimus dominus Theodorus Abbas Werdensis et Helmstedensis "

"13. June 1719. This (table) of the altar was consecrated by the most venerable Mr. Theodor Abbot von Werden and Helmstedt "

Back:

"Reliquias Sanctorum Anastasii et ... martyrum"

"Relics of St. Anastasius and ..., martyrs"
