Helga Schniewind

Helga Schniewind (born November 11, 1926 in Borntin , Western Pomerania ) is a former German local politician ( FDP ). From 1979 to 1984 she was mayor of the city of Heiligenhaus .

Life

Schniewind grew up on an estate in Pomerania and graduated from high school there. She was not able to fulfill her original professional goal of being a veterinarian because she was expelled from Pomerania. After the war she came to Heiligenhaus and initially worked as a translator. In 1953 she married and gave birth to five sons in the following years.

In 1974 she joined the FDP Heiligenhaus and was elected to the city council and deputy mayor in the same year. Her main topics were youth welfare, school, sport, health. From September 1979 she was the city's first woman mayor, succeeding Felix Wittmann . She held this honorary position for an electoral period up to 1984, but also remained active in local politics well into old age. She was a member of the city council until 1996.
