The central bus station (in short: ZOB Berlin ) at the radio tower is located in the Berlin district of Westend in the district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf . It was created on the initiative of Gustav Severin (founder of the Association of Berlin Bus Entrepreneurs) and was put into operation in May 1966. It replaced the most since 1951 Stuttgarter Platz located bus station for bus services to West Germany .

The bus station is used exclusively for long-distance bus travel. A total of 35 bus stops are available for regular and occasional services. The ZOB Berlin is an important point for domestic and international long-distance bus traffic .

The bus station is on the western edge of City West at Masurenallee 4–6, right next to the Berlin Ringbahn and the city ​​motorway that runs parallel here, in the immediate vicinity of the exhibition grounds . The S-Bahn station Messe Nord / ICC on the Ringbahn (lines S41 / S42, S46) and the Kaiserdamm underground station on the U2 line are around 300 and 350 meters away. There is only a direct connection to the bus station via some bus routes operated by the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG). The connection to the city ​​center is via the underground line U2, the station of which is two blocks further north on Kaiserdamm ; the journey time from there to the Zoo train station is eight minutes and to Alexanderplatz 28 minutes.

The close proximity to the city ​​motorway and the AVUS ( A 115 ) is attractive for bus travel companies . This eliminates the need for traffic jam-prone and therefore time-consuming journeys through the city center, which is often common in other large cities.

The ZOB at the radio tower has been operated since 2001 by the International Bus Station Operator Company (IOB), a 100% subsidiary of the BVG .

The ticket offices are operated under the ZOB travel agency brand by Zentral-Omnibusbahnhof Berlin GmbH , a subsidiary of Bayern Express & P. ​​Kühn Berlin . There are also ticket containers from other long-distance bus companies such as B. Flixbus and Eurolines at the ZOB. The IOB is responsible for the complete marketing of the buildings.

In 2012 the ZOB Berlin recorded around 64,000 arrivals and departures with more than 3.2 million passengers and visitors, in the following year the number rose to 99,870. In 2014 there were around 175,000 arrivals and departures and almost nine million handled passengers. In 2015 the number rose to 208,000 severance payments, in the following year to 214,000. In the course of the market consolidation, however, the number of departures fell to 166,000 in 2017, while the number of passengers remained almost unchanged at around six million. A corridor between 230,000 and 344,000 arrivals and departures is expected for 2019.

According to the IOB, 55 bus companies regularly use the central bus station, another ten companies use occasional services. Their lines connect Berlin with many parts of Europe from here. Due to the geographical location of Berlin, the ZOB Berlin plays a special role as the gateway to Eastern Europe . The importance of the ZOB for the German capital is underlined, among other things, by its proximity to the exhibition grounds. The ZOB is used particularly extensively for major events such as the Green Week (IGW), the Tourism Exchange (ITB) or the radio exhibition (IFA).

A basic overhaul and capacity expansion is currently taking place. A complete renovation of the traffic system and the inclusion of the previous bus parking area should enable all bus stops to be approached independently of one another in the future; their number should continue to increase to 37. In addition, a basic overhaul of the building including energy-efficient renovation and an expansion of the waiting hall in building A are planned. The construction work should begin in June 2016 and is expected to last three years. Initially (as of 2013) 3.7 million euros were budgeted for this, plus five million euros for the renovation of the waiting hall, the control center and the toilet block. In 2016, for structural reasons, the decision was made to demolish two buildings instead and rebuild them from scratch. The waiting hall is to be rebuilt as a two-story terminal with a glass facade and then offer 280 seats (previously 76) as well as gastronomic offers. As a result, costs of 14 million euros were assumed. In the meantime, the estimated costs continued to rise, initially to 30 million euros in March 2018 and to 37.7 million euros in May 2018, according to press reports.

While buses are currently being processed at 27 stops, the number of buses has increased to 33 as a result of the renovation. At the same time, the average processing time is to be halved to 15 minutes by converting the installation area.

On November 21, 2017 - to complete the first renovation phase - the first ten renewed bus stops were put into operation.
