The station Wien Meidling is named after the main station of the second most important railway station in Vienna.

Meidling train station is located approx. 3 kilometers west of the main train station. To the west of Meidling station, long-distance routes branch off to the west and south. All ÖBB long-distance trains run between Meidling station and the main station . To the east of the main station, long-distance routes branch out to the north and east. You can board all long-distance trains (with the exception of those coming from the east at the main station) at Meidling station. In addition, the WESTblue line to Salzburg served from December 2017 to December 2019 .

The Meidling station on the U6 underground line, which is adjacent to the station, was called Philadelphiabrücke until October 4, 2013 . The Badner Bahn , tram line 62 and city bus lines serve the stops Dörfelstraße , Meidling station, Eichenstraße (east), Meidling station (west) and Meidling station, Schedifkaplatz (south), which can be reached via the station's passage system.

In the station hall there is a tobacco shop, the advance booking and information point of Wiener Linien , the ticket office of ÖBB and a branch of the Verkehrskreditbank.

Platforms

Wien Meidling train station has eight platforms . The four northern platforms are used by the trains on the S-Bahn main line (S1, S2, S3, S4) and the S80 (platforms 1 and 2 towards Wiener Neustadt , platforms 3 and 4 towards Floridsdorf ). The long-distance trains of the West and South Railway stop at platforms 5 and 6. Trains of the Südbahn also depart from platform 2 or 4 if there is insufficient space. The trains of the S60 (connection of Pottendorfer line and Ostbahn via Vienna main station ) and the long-distance trains from the north and east railway to the west station stop at the southern platforms 7 and 8. The underground line U6 is in the station Meidling (formerly: Philadelphiabrücke) via its own underground central platform. All platforms are barrier-free.

Location details

At street level, the Philadelphiabrücke, which runs in north-south direction, connects the Meidlinger Hauptstraße and the Edelsinnstraße / Eichenstraße with the Breitenfurter Straße and the Schedifkaplatz at its beginning. The railway tracks run under the bridge. Parallel to the bridge, one block to the east and one floor below the train, the entrances from street level to the passage level connecting the platforms with ticket counters and shops for travel needs are located, below this, parallel to the passage level, the subway station.

Another pedestrian passage under the railroad tracks connects the reception building of the station in Eichenstraße with the ÖBB platforms and the Kerschensteinergasse that runs near the Meidlinger Friedhof , about 300 m east of the passage level at the former location of the historic Meidlinger train station on Dörfelstraße . There are bus stops along Eichenstrasse between the passage and the passage.

history

The former station building (1992)

The old station building, demolished between 2002 and 2005, was the last in Vienna that was still preserved from the time of the Vienna – Gloggnitz Railway, which opened in 1841 . The administration building was zweigeschoßig and still had the original pilaster ngliederung and Attica at the former station building, interrupted by eingeschoßige link building. An underpass with tile cladding came from 1905, as were the staircases, bars and platform roofs.

In the station building there was a small private chapel that was looked after by the Sisters of the Cross . The sisters also lived in the station and looked after the children of the railway employees. In 1904 they moved to the newly constructed monastery building in the neighboring Murlingengasse 71.

In 1841, the Meidlinger Bahnhof was a transit station with no other rail connections, but was only a 2nd class station in the ranking of the Südbahngesellschaft . In 1860, Meidling became a crossing station with the construction of the connecting line to Penzing , which connected the southern and western lines .

In 1872 the Donauländebahn with a connection to Meidling was completed. In 1874 the Pottendorfer line was integrated into the southern railway line at Meidling station. From 1898 to 1918 it was also part of the outer network of the Vienna Stadtbahn .

In 1923 the nationalization of the Southern Railway Company began in the Republic of Austria. Rail operations were taken over by the ÖBB . The Meidling Südbahnhof destination information was retained on the Viennese tram until the 1960s.

The Meidlinger Bahnhof played an important role in the civil war events of February 1934. On February 12, the policeman Josef Schiel, who tried to stop an armed worker, was shot dead by him. In a subsequent demonstration, which was supposed to be broken up by the police, rifle shots were fired at the executive, who had to retreat. Armed members of the Republican Protection Association occupied numerous locations in Meidling and set up defense posts along Eichenstrasse from the Matzleinsdorf freight station to the Meidlinger station, which was also occupied. Only with the reinforcement of the armed forces and the deployment of an armored train did the police succeed in recapturing the station.

The gradual expansion of the Matzleinsdorfer freight station to the Meidling station, the opening of the main line of the Wiener Schnellbahn in 1962 and the construction of the U6 subway line completed in 1989 to what was then known as the Philadelphiabrücke station made the Wien Meidling station one of the most important in Vienna . From December 13, 2009, the station had to temporarily take over essential functions of the closed south station , because the newly built main station could not be put into operation until 2012.

In connection with the Meidlinger Bahnhof are the workers' houses at Eichenstrasse 5–23, brick buildings that were built around 1870 according to plans by Wilhelm von Flattich , who, as director of structural engineering for the Südbahngesellschaft, had built the Südbahnhof and other buildings along the route. It is an example of early social housing that offered apartments for employees of the southern railway company in ten three-story workers' houses. On the courtyard side facing the tracks, gardens were created for the children to play. For cost reasons, the buildings were relatively unadorned, only structured by cordon and cornice , and are still inhabited today.

Renovation completed in 2009

The renovation of the Vienna Meidling station was completed by a festive opening on November 30, 2009. The platforms were completely rebuilt, barrier-free access to all platforms was made possible by new elevators , both passenger tunnels were rebuilt and a completely new underground station hall was completed . In addition, an ÖBB Club Lounge was built to offer long-distance travelers the necessary comfort.

From December 13th, 2009 - due to the subsequent demolition of the Vienna Südbahnhof - Vienna Meidling was the terminus for most trains of the Südbahn until 2014 and this was also for the trains of the Pottendorfer Line until December 8, 2012. Since the main train station, which was partially put into operation on December 9, 2012, went into full operation at the end of 2014 / beginning of 2015, the Vienna Meidling train station has only been a through station again. Before that, the position of some tracks on the east head was changed in mid-2014 in order to have a six-track connection - two tracks on the S-Bahn main line , two on the southern line and two on the Pottendorfer line - from Meidling to the main station .

future

The waiting hall of the station will be redesigned by ÖBB Infra by the end of 2020 and will be equipped with more seating and a closed waiting area. In addition, the lighting and the toilet facilities are being renewed. Wiener Linien is adding two more elevators to the existing elevator from the U6 platform or the passage to Schedifkaplatz. An elevator will lead next to the existing elevator from the passage to the surface, in the Eichenstrasse area an elevator will be built from the U6 platform to the passage. The existing lift will be renewed and in future it will connect the U6 platform with Schedifkaplatz without stopping in the passage. The construction work should be completed by the end of 2021.
