Löhne – Rheine railway line
The Löhne – Rheine railway line is a double-track and continuously electrified main railway line from Löhne in North Rhine-Westphalia via Osnabrück in Lower Saxony to Rheine in North Rhine-Westphalia. It runs parallel to the Wiehengebirge in the north and the Teutoburg Forest in the south.
history
The Löhne – Rheine railway is part of the “ Hanoverian West Railway ”, which was built by the Royal Hanoverian State Railways in the 1850s to develop the western parts of what was then the Kingdom of Hanover . As the first section of this connection, the section from Emden to Papenburg was opened on the Emsland route on November 24, 1854 , but it was not yet connected to the existing railway network.
In order to save having to cross the Wiehengebirge south of Minden again, the southern section of the Westbahn was not started following the Hanover – Minden line , but branched off from the Hamm – Minden line of the Cologne-Minden Railway Company in Löhne .
On November 21, 1855, the section between Löhne and Osnabrück went into operation for passenger traffic. The former " Hannoversche Bahnhof " in Osnabrück was closed after the construction of the Osnabrück main station . This was necessary to create a crossing station with the " Hamburg-Venloer Bahn " of the Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft.
Only six months after the second section, the next section via Rheine and Salzbergen to Papenburg was put into operation, closing the existing gap so that from June 23, 1856, continuous passenger trains ran between Minden and Emden.
Linked railway lines
The importance of the line and its stations increased with the number of linked rail lines, especially the Rheine station with the Duisburg – Quakenbrück line of the Rhenish Railway Company , the line to Münster of the Royal Westphalian Railway Company and the former line to Ochtrup der Prussian State Railways .
The Tecklenburger Nordbahn to Altenrheine and the Oldenburger Südbahn to Oldenburg Hauptbahnhof begin in the wedge station (Osnabrück-) Eversburg .
In addition, there are other connections such as those with the Ibbenbüren – Hövelhof railway to Gütersloh in Ibbenbüren station and with the Ravensberger Bahn to Rahden in Bünde (Westf) station or in Kirchlengern to Herford station on the Hamm – Minden railway line .
Expansion to dual track and electrification
Between 1902 and 1916, the line was gradually expanded to double- track. On September 29, 1974, the section between Osnabrück and Rheine was provided with overhead lines , followed by electrification of the section between Osnabrück and Löhne on May 30, 1976.
As of 2016, the ailing Dütebrücke motorway bridge on federal motorway 1 , which crosses the railway line west of Osnabrück, was renewed. The two steel truss bridges on the railway line over the Dortmund-Ems Canal in Rheine-Rodde also have to be replaced . In 2020, severe structural damage was found on the listed bridges, so that only a completely new building is economically feasible.
Planned expansion to a high-speed line
In September 2012, the Münster district government published a list of rail projects that are to be taken into account in the new federal transport infrastructure plan. This included the expansion of the Löhne – Rheine railway line ( up to the Dutch border near Bad Bentheim). Specifically, an increase in the maximum line speed to 200 km / h or 230 km / h was called "desirable". The reason given was that the route was part of the European core network . Furthermore, the Amsterdam – Berlin connection (“Berlin Line”) has been designated as a future high-speed line by the Dutch government. In a first expansion step, the responsible ministry planned to equip all routes on which international traffic is carried out in the Netherlands with ERTMS .
In May 2014, the Federal Ministry of Transport published a list of all project registrations for the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 . In the “ ABS Amsterdam – Berlin” project, the description of the measures called for “upgrading the west-east axis for high-speed traffic”. When the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan was first published on March 21, 2016, the route was initially only classified in terms of potential demand .
After a renewed examination of the situation, however, a short time later the expansion of the line was upgraded as an urgent need . The maximum line speed is to be increased from 140 km / h to 200 km / h in the next few years. In addition, multi-system locomotives are to be used, which make a locomotive change at the border superfluous. For this purpose, 80 level crossings must be replaced on the route. In November 2018, however, it became known that the expansion would not be required after a renewed examination.
The local traffic plan of the Zweckverband Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe (NWL) contains an investigation order for the reactivation of the Westerkappeln-Velpe stop. Due to timetable and infrastructure constraints, it is currently not possible to integrate the stop into the RB 61.
Offer
A two-hour intercity line runs along the route from Berlin Ostbahnhof via Hanover , Minden and Rheine to Amsterdam Centraal , with individual trains running from Osnabrück to Münster (Westphalia) main station.
In addition, several local transport lines are offered:
- the two-hourly regional express RE 60 " Ems-Leine-Express " (train route between Rheine and Braunschweig Hauptbahnhof , operated by Westfalenbahn ) on the entire route . Six-part multiple units of the Stadler KISS type are used .
- The hourly regional train line RB 61 " Wiehengebirgs-Bahn " runs almost the entire route from Rheine to Kirchlengern (train continues to Bielefeld main station , operated by eurobahn ). Five -part FLIRT multiple units are used.
- on the section frets - Kirchlengern the hourly circulating Ravensberger Bahn (Bielefeld central station via the station frets to the station Rahden ), operated by the Euro train ,
- on the short section between Bünde and Löhne, the regional train line RB 77 " Weser-Bahn " runs every hour Monday to Friday with various breaks (train continues to Hildesheim main station , operated by NordWestBahn ).
- as well as on the short section between Osnabrück-Eversburg and Osnabrück Hauptbahnhof the lines RE 18 and RB 58 , both operated by NordWestBahn.
After the timetable change in December 2017
In a Europe-wide tender, the eurobahn was able to secure the operation of the RB 61 line in the Teutoburg Forest network for 15 years. When the timetable changed in December 2017, the company took over operations from the Westfalenbahn. With the start of operations, the RB 61 line has been extended to Hengelo in the Netherlands via its previous endpoint in Bad Bentheim. For this purpose, the company purchased new five-part multi-system multiple units of the Stadler FLIRT type .
Tariff
These tariffs can be used in local transport:
- from wages via Osnabrück to Rheine the “ Westphalian tariff ” as well
- between Melle-Bruchmühlen and Osnabrück Hauptbahnhof the DB local transport tariff ( flat-rate offers of the "NRW tariff" also apply).
In addition, the " NRW tariff " can be used. The “ Lower Saxony Ticket ” is valid for the entire route.
Accidents
- on May 22, 1891 came in the station Kirchlengern a planned traffic forming passenger train with a circus special train together. Several people died.
- On May 16, 2015, the ET 002 railcar of the Westfalenbahn collided with a slurry trailer that had been left on a level crossing near Ibbenbüren . The driver and a passenger of the train were killed, around 20 people were injured, six of them seriously.
