Railway accident in Kirchlengern

When railway accident Kirchlengern a collided on May 22, 1891 as scheduled traffic forming passenger train with a special train , a circus train . Several people died.

Starting position

The passenger train was on the then still single-track railway line Löhne – Rheine from Löhne to Rheine .

A special train ran in the opposite direction. He transported the Royal Dutch Circus Oscar Carré from Hertogenbosch to Hanover , where a number of performances were planned. This was followed by a baggage car , a 1st and 2nd class passenger car , in which the ringmaster, his family and employees of the circus traveled. the accident

The officer in charge at the station illegally allowed the passenger train to enter the station, even though this had already been granted to the special train. The passenger train passed through Kirchlengern station without stopping. Its locomotive rammed the locomotive of the oncoming special train on its way out of the station in a flank drive . The baggage car of the special train was completely smashed. The following passenger car pushed itself up on the rubble, overturned and came to rest on the roof at the foot of an embankment.

consequences

Four people died, including Amalie Carré, the wife of the ringmaster Oscar Carré, and 15 others were injured. The property damage was given in contemporary reports with "several million marks ". The railway was liable for damages . The engine driver and the station master were sentenced to prison terms of half a year and one year.
