Oldenburg (Oldenburg) Hauptbahnhof ( Oldenburg (Oldb) Hbf for short ) is the main train station of the Lower Saxon city of Oldenburg (Oldenburg) . After the gradual shutdown of other stops and train stations, such as in Ofenerdiek or Osternburg , it was the only train station with passenger traffic in the city until the opening of the stop in Wechloy in mid-2015 .

It is a through station with seven platform tracks. The large station building was built in Art Nouveau style. Oldenburg (Oldb) Hbf is classified as a category 2 station by DB Station & Service . It is the only train station in Lower Saxony with a concourse . Around 20,000-25,000 passengers and around 350 trains run daily from Oldenburg main station. This is mainly covered by local and long-distance transport. In addition, 5000 travelers pass the central bus station (ZOB) Oldenburg, which is located on the north side of the station.

In the capital of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg , rail traffic began on the Oldenburg State Railroad from Oldenburg via Delmenhorst to Bremen on July 15, 1867.

Also in 1867, the connection financed by the Prussian State Railways from Oldenburg to Heppens , later Wilhelmshaven , was built on September 3rd . The traffic was also operated by the Oldenburg State Railroad, which bought the route from Prussia in 1913, which led to enormous burdens on the state budget. Between 1898 and 1908 this section was expanded to two tracks.

Two years later, on June 15, 1869, the Oldenburg – Leer line followed .

The Oldenburg – Osnabrück line was opened again on October 15, 1875 by the Oldenburg State Railway. The Ahlhorn – Vechta railway branched off from here in Ahlhorn in 1885 . The branch line from Oldenburg via Ohmstede and Etzhorn to Brake , known as the rubber railway because of the boggy subsoil, was put into operation in 1896.

The first Oldenburg train station was planned for today's Cäcilienplatz. In 1868, however, it turned out that the planned building would be too small for the growing demands. Therefore the project was never realized. Instead, a converted goods shed served the residents of the royal seat as a train station for twelve years.

On May 21, 1879, the first “real” passenger station in Oldenburg, the Centralbahnhof, was inaugurated. It was on the clay plaster near the horse market , which is also the location of today's train station. The neo-Gothic building was designed by the well-known architect Conrad Wilhelm Hase . It was considered one of the largest romantic train station buildings in Germany. In the immediate vicinity there were sheds connected to the port facilities for storing peat , with which some locomotives were operated.

After the decision to build the new train station in its current form was decided, a provisional train station was set up again, which had more of the character of a provincial train station.

Today's Oldenburg Central Station was inaugurated after four years of construction on August 3, 1915 without any major celebrations, after it had already been opened to the public on August 1. The Grand Duke and his daughters did not visit the station until August 4th. The representative station building was built according to the design of the architect and Prussian railway construction officer Friedrich Mettegang , it can be classified in the contemporary reform architecture , but also shows the influences of homeland security architecture and Art Nouveau in the details . A separate building, the so-called Princely Hall , was intended as a lounge for the grand ducal family and princely state guests . In the course of the new construction, the tracks were raised by around 3.25 m. The station building was placed on the edge of the track system, as it was planned to convert the station into a through station. Until then, travelers who wanted to go beyond Oldenburg had to change trains there. The main portal was placed in the central axis of the main square. The ticket offices and baggage handling were located on the right side of the building, while the waiting rooms for classes I to IV were on the left. In addition to the passenger tunnel for passengers, there was also a separate mail and baggage tunnel with lifts to the platforms. The tariff for the platform tickets at that time was 30 pfennigs per person.

On April 21, 1945, the main station was badly damaged in an air raid on Oldenburg . In the course of the 1960s it was decided to paint over the rich paintings from the construction time of the station and to remove the elaborately designed candelabra. This was not stored, even under protest, but destroyed during the renovation work.

In 1961, passenger traffic on the rubber railway to Brake was stopped. In the course of the following years, freight traffic in the direction of Brake continued to decline and the track was partially dismantled. In 1998 the last section between the main train station and Oldenburg-Ohmstede was shut down, so that today the line is slowly becoming overgrown and impassable.

In the course of 1992 the Oldenburg – Leer line was electrified .

On November 5, 2000, the NordWestBahn took over traffic on the Wilhelmshaven – Oldenburg and Oldenburg – Osnabrück lines . Since then, modern LINT 41 diesel multiple units have also shaped the appearance of the train station in Oldenburg. Previously, DB Regio operated on this route with diesel multiple units of the 624 series . In the course of the change of operator to the NordWestBahn, the two lines were extensively renovated, which resulted in a considerable reduction in travel time between Osnabrück and Wilhelmshaven and led to a doubling of the number of passengers.

Since December 2002 the DB Regio has been using modern double-decker cars for the Regional Express between Norddeich Mole and Hanover . According to Parliament in December 2010 opening of the Regio-S-Bahn Bremen / Lower Saxony with Nordwestbahn as operators run between Oldenburg and Bremen EMUs of type Coradia Continental in three- and five-piece version. The S-Bahn runs beyond Oldenburg to Bad Zwischenahn , with a stop in Oldenburg- Wechloy opened in mid-2015 (with a delay of several years) .

In 2000, the central bus station ( ZOB ) was opened on the north side of the station , through which the inner-city and regional bus traffic is handled. To develop the ZOB, a new street underpass was built under the tracks of the train station and a new entrance area was created on the north side. In 2005 the entire station building and the platform systems were renovated. Among other things, all platforms were equipped with elevators, electronic travel indicators and tactile paving.

The toilet facility at Oldenburg Central Station has been managed by Sanifair , a subsidiary of Tank & Rast, since 2013 .

On June 14, 2015, a stop for the regional S-Bahn line 3, which runs between Bad Zwischenahn, Oldenburg and Bremen, was opened near the Carl-von-Ossietzky University in the Wechloy district , which thus directly connects to the regional local transport system has been integrated.

business

The Oldenburg Hbf station, the Hemmelsberg curve with the Hemmelsberg (since 1966) and Tweelbäke branches (since the Krusenbusch marshalling yard was finally closed), as well as the Oldenburg-Easterburg transfer point (since it was dismantled as a transfer point) are used by the "Opf" signal box of the Oldenburg main station served. The interlocking is a push-button interlocking from the Lorenz company in the Sp Dr L30 design from 1966. Originally, three local control points were set up, from which the railway depot (BW), the drainage hill (R2) and the local freight station (R1) could be controlled directly . At the present time (2015) the control point BW has been torn down and no longer exists, and the control points R1 and R2 have been shut down and have become unusable due to dismantling and vandalism .

Reception building

Interior view of the reception building

The reception building is equipped with comparatively few shops and a travel center . The main entrance in the south to the low platform numbers is representative. The bicycle parking spaces are located here. On the other hand, the simple northern rear entrance is the much busier one, because the central bus station and a parking garage are located here , and the footpath to the Park and Ride car park on Messestraße 800 meters away begins. Between the two entrances, the platforms are crossed in the passenger tunnel, all of which are equipped with elevators.

Track hall

Temporary wooden roofing of the platforms in the rail hall

The only station in Lower Saxony Oldenburg Central Station has a train shed . The steel structure was built in 1915 and was originally filled with glass. In the 2000s, the roof supports were found to sink into the ground. To relieve weight, the sheet had the glass infill removed. Originally, she wanted to completely tear down the hall and replace it with the usual butterfly roof. The city of Oldenburg, who wanted to preserve the historic building, was reluctant. Former railway boss Rüdiger Grube brought a reply to the discussion in 2016 . In 2017, the railway had a provisional wooden roof erected on the platforms without prior notice to the city, to protect against rain and falling roof parts. It is expected that this will have to be maintained for years until a solution is completed. In the meantime, Deutsche Bahn has the three variants of the butterfly roof, replica and renovation examined without any results. However, she makes it clear that she expects support from a third party in the event of a solution that goes beyond the absolutely necessary financial framework (as of 2019).

outlook

In the course of the new construction of the JadeWeserPort in Wilhelmshaven, increased freight traffic is to be expected on the Bremen – Oldenburg and Oldenburg-Wilhelmshaven routes . The line to Wilhelmshaven should be electrified by 2018 , but the renovation work has not yet been completed. The single-track sections were expanded to double-track by the end of 2012 . This expansion was assured in August 2006 by the then CEO of Deutsche Bahn AG , Hartmut Mehdorn , until 2010. The increased volume of traffic between Oldenburg and Bremen is a limiting factor for the Regio-S-Bahn line 3. Therefore the RS3 line only runs every hour. To compensate, the ICs on the route between Bremen and Norddeich Mole were released for surcharge-free use with all local transport tickets, the frequency was increased to a two-hour cycle to Emden, served with double-decker trains and the stop in Hude was added. The departure times of the IC together with the RE already result in almost exactly one hour.
