Lappan

The Lappan is the landmark of the city of Oldenburg (Oldb) , located at the beginning of the Langen Straße. The former bell tower dates from 1467/68. It was attached to the stone Holy Spirit Church that had existed since 1394 ("lapped"), the successor to the wooden Holy Spirit Chapel from 1356. This also included the Holy Spirit poor and infirmary founded around 1350 . In the course of the Reformation , the bell tower and chapel were secularized : The Lappan now served as a habitable watchtower , and the chapel building was used as a shelter for soldiers. However, the Lappan residents were obliged to keep the tower clock going and to ring the bell three times a day and during the church service times.

In 1581 a new infirmary was donated in front of the city gates near St. Gertrud , so that the Heilig-Geist-Spital was also given up.

The Lappan is one of the few buildings that survived the city fire of 1676 - albeit badly damaged. The tower hood, which had been Gothic until then, was replaced by a "Welsche" hood during the reconstruction in 1709. The planned demolition of the tower in 1891 could be prevented through civic engagement. Until 1845, the Heiligengeisttor, one of the five city gates of Oldenburg , stood north of the Lappan (before the crossing over the Haaren ) .

Today the tower houses the Oldenburg Info (tourist information). In addition to the central bus station (ZOB), the Lappan is a stop for all city bus routes operated by Oldenburger Verkehr und Wasser GmbH .
