Location of Ofenerdiek in Lower Saxony

Ofenerdiek is a district in the north of Oldenburg in Lower Saxony .

history

In the 18th century, the Oldenburg Counts' fish ponds were in Ofenerdiek (Diek = Low German for dike, in connection with the additions Innerdeich, Hinterm Deich etc.). After they were drained in the 19th century, the boggy landscape began to be slowly settled. At that time, this area belonged to Etzhorn and was not yet mentioned as Ofenerdiek, but as " Farmers Etzhorn IV".

The 20th century

Around the time the First World War began (1914/1915), the enormous size of the “Royal Artillery Depot” was built on what is now the Ofenerdiek.

This munitions factory was demolished after the First World War. However, some barracks were converted for residential purposes in order to be able to provide housing for those returning from war and refugees. This could also be seen as the founding date of today's Ofenerdiek settlement. The administrative reform of 1933 brought Ofenerdiek with Etzhorn , Ohmstede and Nadorst to the independent city of Oldenburg.

today

Today, Ofenerdiek consists largely of single-family houses. The ditches along the Ofenerdieker Straße give the district Dutch charm. A popular local recreation area is the Ofenerdieker See, which was created around the "Swaartemoor".

The boundaries between Ofenerdiek and the "suburban districts" Alexanderhaus and Patentbusch are fluid. According to the Bürgeramt, Ofenerdiek has a population of around 13,000 (as of 2009). This corresponds to approx. 8.1% of the total population of Oldenburg.

traffic

Around 1865, the Oldenburg – Wilhelmshaven railway line was built by Ofenerdiek . The Ofenerdiek station, which opened in 1924, was closed in 1979. The platforms were dismantled in the past. Today the NordWestBahn runs through Ofenerdiek without stopping.
However, there is bus traffic to the city center of Oldenburg, which is ensured by regular buses from Verkehr und Wasser GmbH (VWG). The bus lines operate:
