The Varel station in the Lower Saxony town of Varel has the only remaining station building from the opening time of the Oldenburg – Wilhelmshaven railway line . The building cost 512,000 marks when it was built in 1867.

history

The Prussian consul Bley had proposed in 1846 and 1851 for the first time that Varel be incorporated into the existing rail network. In 1867 Varel was connected to the railway network of the Grand Ducal Oldenburg State Railways through the Wilhelmshaven (formerly Heppens) - Oldenburg line . In order to connect the textile and clinker works in the west of Varel and to have an alternative to the laborious transport of goods, the Varel branch lines were opened from 1893 , making the station important for passenger traffic and the transport of goods from the Frisian Wehde, the Wesermarsch and the Varel harbor got. They were completed in 1896 with the connection of Neuchâtel. In addition to the connection from the train station to the Varel harbor, there were the routes Varel – Langendamm – Borgstede – Bramloge and Borgstede – Bockhorn – Zetel – Neuchâtel.

Passenger traffic on the Varel branch lines ended on May 23, 1954. Passenger traffic on the Varel – Rodenkirchen line opened on May 1, 1913 was discontinued on July 1, 1958. A siding still existed until Diekmannshausen. Goods were transported until the end of 1991, the connection to the cardboard factory was served until 2002. After the Panzer Grenadier Battalion withdrew in 1992 and replaced by airmobile infantry, hardly any military vehicles were loaded in Langendamm. The routes of the Varel branch lines are no longer used today and have largely been dismantled.

The station's equipment included two loading street tracks, two freight shed tracks, two tracks for loading cattle, as well as track scales and loading gauges. In addition, Varel owned a small depot, which was located northeast and a little away from the train station, a turntable was also available. The water tower stood far away, west of the loading street tracks at the station. Only the remains of the wall of the former engine shed are left. The track there crossed that of the port railway not far from the station.

As part of the double-track expansion of the line, the station was fundamentally rebuilt in 2012.

The entire ensemble with the station building, transition to the central platform and goods shed is now a listed building.

Platforms

On platform 1 there are cast iron pillars that support the platform roof. There is a six-part wooden bench on the platform between tracks 2 and 3. The bench and platform roofs come from the first phase of the station's renovation shortly after 1900. The platform bridge dates from before 1914. It is a listed building and should be raised for electrification. Instead of the cost of 2.6 million euros estimated by Deutsche Bahn - which means that the renovation would already be twice as expensive as a new building - the only offer submitted was just under 4 million euros, which is why the bridge will probably be demolished. Until 1969, the overpass led to a second central platform with tracks 4 and 5. This platform was superfluous after the abandonment of passenger traffic to Neuchâtel and Rodenkirchen. Thus, a bridge element with two head structures still stands today. The sidings in the west of the station disappeared during the renovation in 2012. In addition to the platform tracks, there is also a through track 4, which has been in operation again since the renovation in 2012. A soundproof wall was built on both sides of the tracks.

The goods shed is still to the north of the reception building, and since the renovation in 2012 it no longer has a siding.

traffic

Today Varel is only a through station as part of the line between Oldenburg and Wilhelmshaven . The following lines operate (as of 2019):

  • RE 18 Wilhelmshaven – Varel – Oldenburg – Cloppenburg – Quakenbrück – Osnabrück (every hour)
  • RE 19 Wilhelmshaven – Varel – Oldenburg – Hude – Delmenhorst – Bremen (four connections daily)

The route for freight traffic to the JadeWeserPort is currently being expanded by 2020 and electrified by 2022.

Regular events

Every Thursday there are regular events in the Varel train station building under the title Culture at the halt . Artists such as stand-up comedians, actors, book authors or music groups perform here. Kultur am Haltpunkt is organized by Stadtmarketing Varel and financed by regional and national sponsors.
