List of train types

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a list of train types for European and Asian railways.

The term train type was introduced by some European state railways to classify trains of certain types according to tariffs, e.g. B. faster trains, long-running trains, often stopping trains, whereby higher-quality trains were originally separated from others by surcharges.

In Great Britain and Switzerland (with the exception of the Trans-Europ-Express ) train types were originally unknown, although there, too, a distinction was made between local and long-distance trains. In the countries of East Asia with high-speed traffic such as Japan, China or South Korea, train types have also been introduced.

In the rest of the world (America, Africa, Australia and Oceania) train types are completely unknown. Train runs are only announced there by train numbers or names or only by departure times and destinations in public timetables.

Germany

In Germany, a distinction is made between internal operational train types and externally communicated product names. The former serve to process operations between the infrastructure operator and the transport company, the latter serve to inform the passenger.

Train types also contain additional names for special properties of the train, such as B. RE-D indicates a train with double-decker cars. These are only allowed to drive on certain routes due to their vehicle gauge.

Product names, on the other hand, serve to distinguish or identify a train with effective advertising. As a rule, local trains from NE railways are run internally with the DPN train type. In the communication for the passenger, however, there is a short description of the train network, such as B. BOB for Bayerische Oberlandbahn or TLX for Trilex. Alternatively, all trains from different companies with similar characteristics are designated indiscriminately as Regional Express or Regionalbahn, regardless of whether they are internally run as DPN or RE / RB.

Deutsche Bahn brands

For the following types of train, Deutsche Bahn AG (DB) has the right to name or has registered their names as a word mark . Since 2010, non-federal railways have also been allowed to use these names for their train types - in some cases against payment of a license fee - if they meet the relevant standards. When ordering transport services , the public transport authorities often specify the use of these brand names so that the train types do not change their names every time the railway company changes.
