The Georg Verkehrsorganisation GmbH (GVG) is a German railway company (PSC), which is the long-distance passenger dedicated (SPFV) in Europe. The GVG was best known for the Berlin Night Express . After the surprising death of GVG managing director Rolf Georg in early May 2019, the company does not currently have a railway operations manager . EVU Wedler Franz Logistik (WFL) stepped in as a service provider for the operation of the Berlin Night Express . The future of the company is uncertain.

History and field of activity

The company has been operating charter trains on behalf of travel agencies and other companies since 1958. The GVG founded by Rolf Georg - in its current form - was founded on February 28, 1971 in Frankfurt am Main . It was approved as an EVU on April 1, 1994. On September 24, 2000, the Berlin-Malmö Express was launched together with the Swedish railway company SJ AB .

Expansion attempts

GVG has tried several times to offer additional trains in long-distance passenger rail transport to other European countries.

  • Basel - Domodossola - Milan : In the period 1995 to 2003, the Italian state railway Ferrovie dello Stato SpA (FS) prevented GVG from receiving infrastructure access, timetable routes and traction services. This behavior was prohibited by the EU Commission with the decision of August 27, 2003.
  • Mannheim - Paris : For the 2007 timetable year, GVG 2006 applied for six train paths from DB Netz AG , which rejected the application for legal and scheduling reasons. A review procedure at the Federal Network Agency has been discontinued.
