Interregio xpress

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Interregio xpress (IRX) is a planned type of train for the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) . In the future, it should offer timed long-distance traffic connections on routes that are currently not served by long-distance trains or that supplement existing long-distance trains. This is particularly the case on inner-alpine routes (Graz – Linz, Graz – Bischofshofen, (Graz–) Bruck an der Mur – Aichfeld – Klagenfurt), where Intercity or Railjet trains are currently running every two or four hours.

It is planned that the trains will also connect smaller cities to long-distance traffic with more stops than previous Intercity (IC), Eurocity (EC), express train (D) or Railjet connections (RJ, RJX). Since cities such as between Leoben and the Neumarkter Sattel lose their long-distance traffic connections once the Koralm Railway goes into operation, the IRX trains serve as feeders to the high-ranking FV routes (Railjet routes). In order to still allow an attractive journey time, the IRX trains are to be run with powerful TALENT3 railcars .
