Länderbahn GmbH (DLB), formerly Vogtlandbahn GmbH , is a German rail transport company based in Viechtach , which originally only provided transport services in Vogtland , but has now also operated nationally. The Länderbahn is a company of Regentalbahn AG , which belongs to the Ferrovie dello Stato subsidiary Netinera (formerly Arriva Germany).

The name "Die Länderbahn" is officially used as a brand by the parent company "Regentalbahn AG" . The Vlexx GmbH is called a subsidiary of the "Länderbahn", but this refers to the Regentalbahn and not to Die Länderbahn GmbH.

The Länderbahn is a member of the tariff association of the federal and non-federal railways in Germany (TBNE).

history

Emergence

After German reunification in 1990, the number of passengers in local rail transport in Vogtland, as in most of the other regions of the new federal states, fell sharply, as the Deutsche Reichsbahn soon couldn't make it with outdated locomotives and coaches against the increasingly repaired roads. The Free State of Saxony therefore decided to significantly increase the attractiveness of the Zwickau  - Falkenstein  - Klingenthal and Herlasgrün  - Falkenstein  - Adorf railway lines (timetable route 539), which were to become model railroad lines . The infrastructure operator DB Netz, with financial support from the Free State of Saxony, has continuously renewed the track and prepared it for speeds of 80 km / h, the existing stations were made barrier-free and new stations were set up. However, due to the high maintenance costs, a number of tracks were rationalized, train stations like that of the ski resort Schöneck / Vogtl. were converted into simple breakpoints .

Part of the model project was also the re-allocation of local rail transport services as part of a competition project. In addition to new vehicles, noticeable cycle timetables and optimized transfer relationships between the modes of transport were required . Regental-Bahnbetriebs-GmbH from Viechtach in Bavaria emerged as the winner from the invitation to tender published in September 1994 . It was able to start operation on November 23, 1997 after the renovation measures were completed. On January 1, 1998, Vogtlandbahn GmbH, which had previously only been part of Regental-Bahnbetriebs-GmbH, was founded as an independent company. In contrast to the previous Deutsche Bahn trains , capacity utilization has developed very positively since the Vogtlandbahn took over operations. In the spring of 1998, therefore, the construction of the company's own depot in Neumark began, which was opened on July 4, 2000 after a two-year construction period. The old depot in Reichenbach, which was used previously, was no longer needed.

Expansion outside of Saxony

RegioSprinter in Sokolov (CZ), the southern end of the line since 2003

In the years that followed, Vogtlandbahn GmbH won several tenders and greatly expanded its route network. Due to the location of the Vogtland near the borders with Bavaria and Thuringia , the expansion also went beyond the Saxon state borders, such as to Hof , Schleiz and Gera. But the nearby Czech Republic , at that time still a candidate for EU membership, was recognized as a new market. Vogtlandbahn GmbH was also able to record large route gains in Bavaria, with lines being extended to Marktredwitz, Weiden and Regensburg .

Expansion continued under other brands. On December 14, 2014, the Trilex started operations in Eastern Saxony. This trend continued with the brands Alex , Waldbahn and Oberpfalzbahn . This expanded the network to Lindau , Prague and Breslau .

Sale and renaming

In autumn 2004, the Free State of Bavaria sold its majority shares in Vogtlandbahn GmbH to the British Arriva group of companies. After Arriva was bought by Deutsche Bahn in 2010, the German business had to be resold for competition reasons. The new owner is the Italian Ferrovie dello Stato together with the Luxembourg infrastructure fund Cube. The German holding company has been called Netinera since March 2011 .

The Vogtlandbahn GmbH was renamed "Die Länderbahn GmbH" in 2015 - the Länderbahn was already a brand of the owner Regentalbahn . The brand name in the core network vogtlandbahn remained (in lower case).

Line network

In the current timetable year, many lines are served by the Länderbahn (with the brands vogtlandbahn, alex, waldbahn, oberpfalzbahn and trilex ): the Vlexx network also belongs to the Länderbahn.

Since there was only a limited range of different vehicle types from the industry at the time the Vogtlandbahn began operating, it was decided to purchase lightweight trains of the " RegioSprinter " type from Duewag , which had previously been ordered by the Düren district railway . Initially, eight multiple units were purchased in a first series from 1996, and in a second series in the summer of 1997 another ten trains, so that a total of 18 RegioSprinters were available at the start of scheduled operations. Between 1998 and 1999 the ten vehicles of the second series were converted for operation on the inner city route in Zwickau. According to the operating regulations of the trams (BOStrab), they received side indicators, brake lights and warning bells. Furthermore, they were equipped with a signal influencing device so that - like the tram - the traffic lights can be activated and not be impaired by road traffic. In 2004, the remaining eight multiple units from the first series were converted accordingly to enable even more trains to travel to the center of Zwickau. The RegioSprinter are primarily suitable for operation on shorter routes, as they have 2 + 3 seating with only thinly padded seats and only reach a top speed of 120 km / h. In their original condition, the vehicles did not have a toilet either , and all railcars were later retrofitted accordingly for cross-border traffic to the Czech Republic. The RegioSprinter operate as scheduled on lines VB 1, VB 5 and half on VB 2. They were also used until December 2006 on the now closed Schönberg – Schleiz line (line VB 7). In 2006, two railcars were on a long-term loan to the Prignitzer Eisenbahn GmbH , which they used in the Oberhausen area.

In 2000, as a reaction to its business expansion, Vogtlandbahn GmbH acquired nine " Desiro Classic " multiple units from Siemens Transportation Systems. The vehicles, which are run by Deutsche Bahn under the series number 642, are also suitable for longer distances. In contrast to the RegioSprintern, more comfortable seating in the 2 + 2 arrangement with thicker upholstered seats was used. In addition, one compartment was designed as 1st class with seating 1 + 2 and a closed toilet system was installed. Compared to the identical railcars of the Deutsche Bahn, the Desiros of the Vogtlandbahn u. a. Also equipped with a ticket machine, sliding steps in the boarding areas and emergency brake override. Another 15 railcars were procured in two further series in 2002. While the first series had an engine output of 2 × 275 kW (2 × 374 PS), analogous to the DB trains, engines with 2 × 315 kW (2 × 429 PS) were installed in the following series in order to also cover sections of the Route network to be able to drive unhindered. The Desiros were used on schedule on lines VB 3, VB 4, half on VB 2 and half on the trilex lines.

From February 2012, the arrival of new Stadler Regio-Shuttle RS1 multiple units began , which were procured to rejuvenate the vehicle population. The railcars meet the requirements of the BOStrab in order to be able to serve the route to the center of Zwickau. With the timetable change on December 9, 2012, eight new railcars were put into operation. In 2015, four regional shuttles were also bought by ODEG , which were temporarily used on the TL70 line of the Trilex.

The Vogtlandbahn network formed the starting point for what was later to become the regional railway. Vogtlandbahn GmbH has been independently serving up to 5 lines in the Saxon, Thuringian, Bavarian and Czech Vogtland since 1998, with the routes mainly aimed at Plauen . Are used Regioshuttles and RegioSprinter .

After the renaming of Vogtlandbahn GmbH to "Die Länderbahn GmbH", the brand "Vogtlandbahn" was continued in the original network. The central depot is located in Neumark (Vogtland) , where there is also a Länderbahn training center.

Trilex

Since December 12, 2010, the regional railway has been serving the Liberec – Zittau - Varnsdorf – Rybniště / Seifhennersdorf route in the Germany-Poland-Czech Republic tri-border region. The former Vogtlandbahn railcars of the Desiro series with Trilex and Regioshuttle inscriptions are used . The Regioshuttle trains have the Vogtlandbahn and Trilex labels. The L7 and RE2 Trilex trains (between Liberec and Zittau) are partly manned by bilingual train attendants .

Since the timetable change in December 2014, the Länderbahn has also been operating the two routes Dresden – Bischofswerda – Bautzen – Görlitz and Dresden – Bischofswerda – Zittau – Liberec of the so-called East Saxony network under the trilex brand . Only Desiro railcars are used there. In cooperation with DB Regio, individual through trains to Wrocław (Breslau) are offered. The direct connections between Dresden and Tanvald, which were provided by DB Regio, have ceased to exist since the takeover of the Trilex, between Dresden and Görlitz or Zittau. The TLX trains on the RE2 line only run to Liberec (Reichenberg).

Alex

In October of the same year, the Länderbahn emerged as the winner of the Arriva-Länderbahn-Express in a competition process organized by the Bavarian Railway Company in 2005 . The tender project included a "regional express service" every two hours from Munich via Regensburg to Schwandorf, from where the trains are to continue their journey every four hours alternating to Hof and Furth im Wald . The Länderbahn was also able to win the tender for operation on the Munich – KemptenOberstdorf / Lindau route , which it has been serving since December 2003 under the brand name “ Allgäu-Express ” together with the Swiss SBB GmbH . The Vogtlandbahn bought 90 used passenger coaches for the new traffic, 60 of which were modernized in Halberstadt and Neumünster. Since the timetable change in 2009, an additional seven double-decker cars that were manufactured in Görlitz have been in use. To cover the trains between Oberstdorf / Lindau and Munich as well as between Regensburg and Hof / Pilsen, eleven class 223 diesel locomotives of the type EuroRunner from Siemens are in use, which are leased by Alpha Trains . For the electrified section Munich – Regensburg four Siemens type ES64U4 locomotives were also leased and classified as BR 183. These trains are fully serviced in the new Länderbahn plant in Schwandorf. Since the takeover by Netinera, the train has only been marketed as alex.

Upper Palatinate Railway

The Länderbahn operates five lines under the Oberpfalzbahn brand in Eastern Bavaria between Hof, Marktredwitz, Schwandorf, Regensburg, Waldmünchen, Furth im Wald and Lam. With Cheb and Domažlice and a few smaller stops, Czech train stations are also connected to the route network.

In summer 2001 the Upper Palatinate Railway started with eleven Stadler Regio-Shuttle RS1 railcars . The fleet was expanded in 2013 to include two used vehicles of the same type. For the route Regensburg – Marktredwitz, railcars of the Polish type PESA LINK were initially planned. The order was canceled due to admission problems. Instead, LINT 41 vehicles have been used since March 9, 2013 .

Forest railway

The Länderbahn operates four lines under the Waldbahn brand in the Zwiesel region, Bavarian Forest: Plattling – Bayerisch Eisenstein , Zwiesel – Grafenau and Zwiesel – Bodenmais , as well as the Gotteszell – Viechtach railway line that was reactivated in September 2016 . In the Bayerisch Eisenstein / Železná Ruda-Alžbětín station there is a connection to Czech trains in the direction of Plzeň and Praha.

The forest railway is part of the national park traffic concept Bavarian Forest and one of four reference routes of the Bavarian Railway Company (BEG). The BEG is paying special attention to these railway lines in order to evaluate various innovative concepts for increasing quality.

The Waldbahn is currently using 14 modernized Stadler Regio-Shuttle RS1 diesel multiple units from the Viechtach depot.

Vogtland Express

In January 2009: The Vogtland Express only ran to Zwickau at times.

The Vogtland Express connected the Vogtland with Berlin from 2005 to 2015 .

Between June 12, 2005 and September 30, 2012, Vogtlandbahn was one of the few private railways to offer a long- distance passenger train service . The connection from Plauen to Berlin Ostbahnhof and back was used once a day . The Vogtlandbahn filled the gap that had arisen since the last Interregio from Vogtland to Berlin was discontinued and took the region away from long-distance north-south traffic. After several changes to the timetable, operations were temporarily suspended from February 16, 2009 to April 7, 2009 for economic reasons, but the Vogtlandexpress resumed its journey on April 8, 2009. Since January 2011 the Vogtland-Express has been running as a rail replacement service (SEV), as the Vogtlandbahn had no corresponding railcars. The SEV served the train stations Reichenbach , Zwickau , Chemnitz , Berlin-Schönefeld Airport and Berlin Zoologischer Garten . When the timetable changed on June 12, 2011, the Vogtland Express was partially switched back to railcars.

In spring 2012, the days of the train pair, which originally ran daily, were reduced to Friday to Monday and since October 1, 2012, the Vogtland Express has only operated daily as a long-distance bus from Reichenbach via Zwickau, Chemnitz , Berlin-Schönefeld Airport, Berlin Zoologischer Garten to the head office Bus station at the Berlin radio tower . Finally, the Vogtlandbahn withdrew from the project and since October 1, 2014, the bus companies involved have been running the line, which has been running from Plauen to Berlin again since summer 2013 , under the name Vogtland-Long-Distance Bus. Due to a lack of profitability, this traffic was also discontinued at the end of 2015.

The railway school of the Länderbahn

The Länderbahn has its own railway school and is recognized by the Federal Railway Authority as a training and examination organization. Due to the shortage of skilled workers, participants from Eastern Europe are being trained in addition to Germans.
